As Earth Day draws near, Google is slashing prices on its popular Nest Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, selling them for just $99 via Amazon through April 22. But you can cut that price even lower.

This is the entry-level Nest thermostat, which is programmable and Wi-Fi enabled so you can check on your house and set the temperature while you're away from home. You can easily set a schedule using the Nest app, and it will even adjust the temperature if it detects you aren't home.

The Nest is also available direct from Google for $99. But if you've got an American Express card, see if you can save up to 40% by using Membership Rewards points on Amazon. That'd cut the price down as low as just $60!

Residents in some states may also be eligible for rebates from their energy provider or insurance company of up to $50 for installing a programmable thermostat, like Centerpoint Energy in Minnesota. Check to see if you're eligible for a rebate – on top of this sale price!

In our experience, these thermostats are fairly easy to install yourself. It comes in several colors, and you can also get a version that comes with a trim kit for $114.99.

Unfortunately, the Nest Learning Thermostat – which has a full-color display and automatically adjusts heating to your schedule – is not discounted in this sale. But the standard Nest should be plenty, and this discount is too good to pass up if you've been eyeing a Nest.

It will work with services like Amazon's Alexa and the Google Assistant.

The Nest is a Traveler's Best Friend

We love the Nest Thermostat and members of our team have been using it and saving money for years. Having a Nest Thermostat (or any smart thermostat for that matter) has shown to save an average of 10-12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills every month in independent studies. That means the Nest can pay for itself in under two years.

Besides saving money, it can also provide peace of mind by being able to check on your house during your travels. That's why we think the Nest Thermostat is a Thrifty Traveler's best friend.

Additionally, check out Nest Rebates and Rewards. Various insurance and local power companies offer rebates for the various Nest products. This rebate can be stacked with the savings from buying through April 22.

Bottom Line

The Nest Thermostat is a great way to conserve energy and monitor your home while you're away. And if you don't already have one, today is a great time to purchase one as they are on sale for Earth Day. They can easily pay for themselves over time by reducing your energy usage.

Additionally, many utility companies will offer an incentive for installing and using the nest. Check to see if you are eligible.
