The credit card bonus offer arms race continues. On the heels of Chase ending its best-ever sign-up bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, American Express has just rolled out the best offer we’ve ever seen on the Platinum Card from American Express – their top tier travel rewards credit card.

You can now earn 75,000 American Express Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 in the first six months of card membership. That’s up from the standard offer of 60,000 points – plus you’ve got twice the usual three-month period to earn them. But it gets even better.

Thrifty Tip: Try searching for the Amex Platinum in an incognito browser to see if you can pull up the better 100,000-point welcome offer – or even 125,000 points, both with the 10x bonuses! If not, we appreciate if you apply through our links.

In addition to the welcome bonus itself, you’ll also earn 10x points for every dollar you spend at both gas stations and at supermarkets in the U.S. on up to $15,000 in combined purchases in the first six months of card membership! That’s the most lucrative bonus you’ll find for spending at supermarkets or gas stations. If you maximize it by spending $15,000 over six months, you’d earn another 150,000 Membership Rewards points for a total of 225,000 points.

One important caveat: This offer is only available for new cardmembers. Existing Platinum Card from American Express cardholders won’t be eligible to earn 10x points per dollar spent at both U.S. gas stations and supermarkets.

Our Analysis

This is one of the best credit card offers we have ever seen, period.

At $550 a year, the American Express Platinum Card isn’t cheap. And it may seem fruitless given you can’t use many of this card’s benefits while most travel is on pause.

But this is an unbeatable chance to pile up a ton of points for your future travels. You can easily earn 75,000 points after spending $5,000 within six months. That’s twice as long as the typical three-month period most credit card companies give you to meet a spending requirement.

But as we’ve all shifted our spending during the pandemic, the ability to earn 10x on groceries and gas stations in the U.S. is unparalleled. While spending $15,000 over the next six months may be a tall order, maximizing this new bonus category would allow you to earn another 150,000 Amex points. That makes this bonus almost four times as large as the standard 60,000-point welcome offer.

And even if you only spent a total of $5,000 in these categories over and months, you would still earn an additional 50,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. It is an insane deal and easily makes this the best card for both categories for new cardmembers. Sadly, existing Platinum Card from American Express cardholders will not be eligible for this new category spending bonus.

This new offer gives you the ability to earn up to 225,000 Membership Rewards points if you can maximize the 10x points bonus. That is an insane amount of value. At the very minimum, you should be able to get $2,225 in value out of these points, but it is likely you can get much, much more.

Bottom Line

This is the best ever offer on the Amex Platinum Card. American Express allows you to earn the bonus on all of their card products once per lifetime. So if you’ve never had the Platinum Card, there has never been a better time to jump on this best-ever offer.

American Express has not yet communicated an end date to the offer. We just know that it is available for a limited time. Don’t wait if you are thinking about it.
