American Airlines miles are incredibly valuable. Even if you never step foot on an American Airlines plane, they are worth earning.

Luckily, American makes it easier than many airlines to pile up miles thanks to the fact that they have co-branded credit cards from two different banks: Citi and Barclays. That means you can earn welcome offers on both cards and earn a ton of American AAdvantage miles quickly.

And one of the key ingredients to making this happen is the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. The card allows you to earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles after spending $2,500 in the first three months of card membership. And further, the card’s $99 annual fee is waived for the first year of card membership.

Pair the Citi AAdvantage Card with the Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard

Delta has American Express. United and Southwest have Chase.

Most airlines have just one bank, but American partners with two.

That’s significant because you can earn the welcome offer bonus on each American Airlines credit card, netting you 110,000 American Airlines miles after paying one annual fee on the Barclays AAdvantage Red Aviator Card and spending $2,500 on the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Card in the first three months of card membership.

You’ll earn 60,000 AAdvantage miles after making just one purchase and paying your $99 annual fee on the AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard.

How Far Can 110,000 AAdvantage Miles Take You?

American Airlines AAdvantage miles are some of the most valuable miles out there. Not only can you use them for flights with American, but you can redeem them for incredible experiences for flights on their Oneworld alliance partners like Qatar Airways, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and many others.

Want to fly in a Qatar Qsuite? Or how about your own Etihad apartment? It’s one of the 9 best deals in the world of points and miles. AA is unique among the major domestic airlines in that it doesn’t charge more for a partner redemption. In our mind, this advantage alone makes American Airlines miles worth earning. So what can you fly?

Etihad’s First Class – dubbed The Apartment on its A380s – is bookable with AA miles, and it lives up to the hype. You can fly this incredible first-class cabin between London-Heathrow (LHR) or Paris-Charles De Gaulle (CDG) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) for just 62,500 AAdvantage miles.

Or you can fly it between Seoul (ICN) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) for just 50,000 miles. It’s one of the best values out there.

Another outstanding partner airline Qatar Airways. Qatar flies its newest planes equipped with QSuites, the best business class in the world, to Doha (DOH) from a growing list of U.S. departure cities.

These flights cost 70,000 AA miles one way, and you can now book Qatar Airways award tickets online. You won’t find a nicer business class product in the world. Period.

Oneworld partner airlines Japan Airlines (JAL) and Cathay Pacific offer two of the best ways to fly business or first class to Asia. For example, a flight to Tokyo in one of JAL’s private SkySuites costs just 60,000 AAdvantage miles.

Citi AAdvantage Application Restrictions

Citi limits welcome bonus offers to one bonus per card family in a 24 month period. This means if you have recently earned the bonus on the Citi American Airlines Mile Up card, you wouldn’t be eligible to earn the bonus on the Citi AAdvantage card for 24 months from the date you closed the Mile Up card.

Citi considers personal and business cards to be separate. So for the purposes of earning the bonus on the personal Citi AAdvantage American Airlines card, having the business version of the card will not impact your ability to earn a welcome bonus offer.

Finally, Citi allows you to apply for only one credit card within an eight-day period, one business card in a 90 day period and only two Citi credit card applications total in any 60 day period.

If none of these restrictions apply to you, now is a great time to grab the 50,000 point welcome bonus offer after spending $2,500 in the first three months with the Citi AAdvantage card.

Bottom Line

Now is a great time to pick up the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard if you haven’t had it or earned a bonus on a card in the same family in the last 24 months. You won’t pay an annual fee in the first year and it can be combined with the bonus you can earn on the Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red World Elite Mastercard.
