When Will International Travel Resume? A Country-by-Country Guide to Reopening Borders

Are you dreaming of brighter days when you can explore the world again? We are too. And those days are coming fast.

As vaccinations speed up around much of the globe, travel is coming back sooner rather than later. Several popular countries across Europe have already reopened to vaccinated Americans. The rest of the European Union is poised to lift a yearlong travel ban on Americans in time for summer.

But other countries across the world still have major restrictions in place, if not outright bans. Between testing, proof-of-vaccination requirements, and short quarantine periods, many international trips will be more complicated than just a few years ago. And Americans returning from abroad still need to present a negative COVID-19 test before boarding their flight home – regardless of their vaccination status. 

So when will international travel resume? Depending on where you’re going, it already has. Here’s a look around the globe, organized alphabetically (click below to jump!)

A

Albania

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Commercial flights have resumed to Albania, and the country is open. There are very few travel restrictions and no quarantines required for most travelers. 

 

Anguilla

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if their Visitor Application Form is accepted. They must have negative COVID-19 test results within five days of arrival. And even then, a 14-day quarantine is required in a government-approved facility.

 

Antigua & Barbuda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than seven days before arrival.  All passengers must wear a mask during disembarkation and at all times in public during their stay. Travelers must also complete a Health Declaration Form and will be subjected to health screenings on arrival. 

 

Argentina

Open to American Travelers? No

Anyone who is not a resident of Argentina will not be permitted entrance. The U.S. Embassy has no estimated date for an end to this travel ban. 

 

Aruba

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All U.S. residents may enter Aruba with the option to take a PCR test on arrival at the airport or provide their own certified test within 72 hours prior to travel.

To enter Aruba, you must do the following:

  • Provide basic traveler information
  • Complete a traveler health assessment
  • Negative COVID-19 PCR test result within 3 days of departure
  • Purchase travel insurance from Aruba’s government for $10 per day

 

Australia

Open to American Travelers? No

Australia has banned all non-residents and non-citizens from entering the country, and even Australian residents are banned from traveling abroad. Australian officials have recently extended that ban through at least mid-September – but Australian officials have warned they’re unlikely to open the borders until sometime in 2022.

Austria

Open to American Travelers? No

Most U.S. citizens are not permitted entry into Austria until further notice.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Austria, to implement that change.

B

The Bahamas

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry into the Bahamas but must submit a Travel Health Visa Application which will require a negative COVID-19 test result. Testing must be performed within five days of travel. Children under 10 do not need to present test results. Vaccinated travelers are exempt from COVID-19 testing requirements.

 

Bangladesh

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry into Bangladesh if they have a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours of travel. A mandatory 14-day quarantine is required for arriving passengers.

 

Barbados

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Barbados officially reopened to travelers on July 12, 2020. U.S. citizens must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

Unvaccinated travelers with a valid negative COVID-19 PCR test result will be quarantined at a designated hotel and take a second COVID-19 PCR test five days after arrival (at least 120 hours after arrival) in Barbados.

Vaccinated travelers will take a COVID-19 PCR test upon arrival and must remain in quarantine until a negative test result is received.

 

Belarus

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with quarantine

Travelers are allowed entry but will need a negative COVID-19 test result and must quarantine for 10 days. 

 

Belgium

Open to American Travelers? No

Belgium is generally following guidance from the European Union. Countries that are not part of the EU or the Schengen area are not permitted entry for non-essential travel.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Belgium, to implement that change.

 

Belize

Open to American Travelers? Yes

A negative COVID-19 test result taken within 96 hours of travel or testing on arrival ($50) is required. Fully vaccinated travelers are welcome with no testing required. Travelers should have completed full immunization two weeks prior to travel.

 

Bermuda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers have been welcomed back to Bermuda since July 1, 2020.

Visitors must obtain a certificate for a negative COVID-19 test within five days before departure. They must also have appropriate health insurance. Travelers will be tested at the airport upon arrival and must quarantine for 24 hours until the results are given. More COVID-19 testing is required on Day 4, Day 8, and Day 14 if your stay is that long.

 

Bolivia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

According to the Bolivian embassy, U.S. citizens are permitted entry into Bolivia if they have a negative COVID-19 test result within 10 days of travel. Temperature checks and health screenings will be in place at international airports.

 

Bonaire

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted to enter Bonaire if they have a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival.

 

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed into Bosnia and Herzegovina, but they’re required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of arrival.

 

Brazil

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted to travel to Brazil by air with negative COVID-19 test results performed no more than 72 hours prior to departure. Proof of health insurance is no longer required. Health screenings remain in place at international airports.

 

Bulgaria

Open to American Travelers? Yes

The borders are open to most foreign citizens who have either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to arrival.

C

Cambodia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry but must pay a deposit of $2,000 on arrival for mandatory COVID-19 testing and potential medical services. Travelers must possess negative COVID-19 test results issued within 72 hours of arrival. Health insurance must also be purchased for $90 that will cover 20 days in the country.

All visitors will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days even if they’ve tested negative on arrival.

 

Canada

Open to American Travelers? No

Canada and the U.S. have agreed to extend the ban on non-essential travel across the border through at least July 21, 2021. Travelers entering Canada must present a valid 14-day quarantine plan until further notice. 

Canadian officials have discussed lifting the border travel ban, but that plan has not been finalized.

 

Cayman Islands

Open to American Travelers? No

Borders remain closed to most travelers until further notice.

 

Chile

Open to American Travelers? No

Non-resident foreigners will not be allowed to enter Chile until further notice.

China

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with quarantine.

China’s borders are open to U.S. citizens with valid visas and residence permits. They must test on arrival and quarantine for 14 days. More tests are required to be released from quarantine.

 

Colombia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed to enter. A negative COVID-19 test is no longer required to enter Colombia.

 

Costa Rica

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

Costa Rica slowly opened its borders over the summer and fall, letting in tourists from a handful of countries and then visitors from select U.S. states starting in September.

As of Nov. 1, all U.S. citizens and residents are allowed to travel to Costa Rica. And as of Oct. 26, the country eliminated its requirement for a negative COVID-19 test for entry, according to the Costa Rica Tourism Board.

Travelers will need to fill out a “Health Pass” form and have travel insurance with medical coverage for entry.

 

Cote d’Ivoire

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Air travel is now authorized to Cote d’Ivoire, also known as the Ivory Coast.

Travelers arriving at the international airport are required to fill out an air travel declaration form as well as follow all health measures related to travel. A negative COVID-19 test result must be provided, taken within seven days of departure.

 

Croatia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Tourists may enter with documented evidence of fully paid accommodation prior to arrival. Tourists must also have a negative PCR test result taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival.

Fully vaccinated travelers with a certificate of a COVID-19 vaccination showing their final dose was more than 14 days prior are also approved to enter. Also, those with a medical certificate confirming they’ve recovered from COVID-19 may also enter. The certificate is valid 11-180 days after the positive result.

 

Cuba

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

A negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival is required. Incoming travelers will be given a polymerase chain reaction test upon arrival.  They are then required to self-isolate.  On day five of isolation, they will be required to undergo a second PCR test.

 

Curaçao

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted entry into Curaçao. They will need negative COVID-19 PCR test results taken within 72 hours of arrival. Travelers from these states will be required to present a state-issued ID as proof of residency. A COVID-19 test on the third day is also required.

 

Cyprus

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers may enter Cyprus with either a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival or proof of being fully vaccinated.

 

Czech Republic

Open to American Travelers? Yes

The Czech Republic is now open to U.S. travelers with no restrictions on entry. Although, in order to check into your hotel, and enter certain establishments like museums, you will need to present a vaccine card, a negative COVID-19 test, or proof of recent recovery from COVID-19.

D

Denmark

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Fully vaccinated travelers are now welcome in Denmark. Their final dose of the vaccine must be at least 14 days prior to arrival. No testing or quarantine will be required for these travelers.

 

Dominica

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine.

Travelers must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. Travelers from high-risk countries, including the U.S., will have a mandatory quarantine at a government-approved facility with the option to take a COVID-19 test after five days. If this test is negative, travelers will be free from quarantine.

Vaccinated travelers will only need to quarantine for two days.

 

Dominican Republic

Open to American Travelers? Yes

There are no COVID-19 testing requirements but authorities will administer random quick breath tests to 3% to 15% of arriving passengers.

Also, tourists visiting a hotel will be granted a temporary, free travel assistance plan that will include coverage for emergencies, COVID-19 testinglodging for prolonged stays and the cost for changing flights in the event of an infection. This insurance will be provided at no cost to the visitor until July 31, 2021 and will be 100% paid for by the Dominican State.

 

E

Ecuador

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All arriving passengers must have their results from a COVID-19 test taken no more than three days prior to arrival, or they will be tested at the airport on arrival. Travelers are also welcome if they can present a vaccination card showing they’ve completed COVID-19 vaccination.

Also, travelers who have tested positive for COVID-19 and it’s been more than a month since the onset of symptoms can present a medical certificate proving they have good health and may also enter.

Egypt

Open to American Travelers? Yes

While borders are open to all travelers, a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours prior to arrival must be presented. Health screenings and temperature checks will be administered upon arrival.

 

El Salvador

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

As of Sept. 19, 2020, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter El Salvador. COVID-19 negative test results are required from a test taken within 72 hours of departure to enter. Fully vaccinated travelers are also welcome with no testing required. 

 

Estonia

Open to American Travelers? No

Estonia is joining the group of countries following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from a handful of countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Estonia, to implement that change.

 

Ethiopia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travelers will be required to show negative COVID-19 test results taken within five days of departure. Travelers will also be subject to a seven-day quarantine period at a designated hotel or quarantine center at their own expense.

F

Fiji

Open to American Travelers? No

Fiji’s airport remains closed and the country is slowly reopening activities on the islands. There have been talks with New Zealand and Australia about opening a “travel bubble” which would allow entry between citizens of all three countries. 

 

Finland

Open to American Travelers? No

The Government of Finland is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from several countries. U.S. citizens are not currently permitted entry.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Finland, to implement that change.

 

France

Open to American Travelers? Yes

France is using a ranking system called the “stoplight system”.  This system assigns countries a color, either green, orange, or red, based on  COVID-19 health indicators. Currently, the U.S. is now designated green. This means vaccinated passengers over the age of 11  must present a vaccination card but you no longer need a negative COVID-19 test in addition.

French Polynesia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

French Polynesia reopened its borders on May 1, but some restrictions remain in place.

A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours prior to departure will be required. Also, a mandatory quarantine is required for all travelers for 10 days who are not vaccinated or do not have proven immunity. They must test on day one, four and day eight. If both tests are negative they are released from quarantine on day 11.  No quarantine is required for vaccinated travelers.

G

Georgia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted entry into Georgia if they present a COVID-19 vaccine certificate confirming they’ve received two full doses of the vaccine. For travelers arriving without a vaccine, they will need to present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure.

 

Germany

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of June 20, Germany has opened its doors to U.S. citizens are have proof of being fully vaccinated.

 

Ghana

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed to enter if they have a negative COVID-19 test result conducted within 72 hours of departure. Each passenger arriving in Ghana over the age of 5 will be required to take another COVID-19 test at the airport at their own expense ($150). Test results are available within 30 minutes and no quarantine will be required for those who test negative.

 

Greece

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of April 19, 2021, Greece has reopened to U.S. citizens.

They must provide a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival OR have proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to arrival. Random health checks and other safety measures remain in place at the international airport.

Grenada

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are allowed entry into Grenada.

A negative COVID-19 result from a test taken no more than three days prior to departure is required. Vaccinated travelers must quarantine for 48 hours and PCR test on arrival.

Unvaccinated travelers will need to remain in quarantine at their accommodation for five days. On day five, travelers can take another COVID-19 test and if results are negative they are allowed into the community.

 

Guatemala

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed to enter Guatemala if they present a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arrival or have proof of completing a COVID-19 vaccine course.

H

Honduras

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Honduras reopened its borders to American tourists on Aug. 17. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arrival is required for entry. Fully vaccinated travelers are not required to take a COVID-19 test.

 

Hong Kong

Open to American Travelers? No

Most U.S. citizens are currently not allowed entry into Hong Kong.

 

Hungary

Open to American Travelers? No

After previously allowing U.S. citizens to enter with COVID-19 testing required, the government is now declaring that foreigners without a residence permit will be banned from entering Hungary until further notice.

 

I

Iceland

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Iceland is now open to all travelers who have been fully vaccinated. They will no longer be required quarantine. A free PCR test is still required on arrival. Travelers who can provide proof of being previously infected with COVID-19 are also welcome.

India

Open to American Travelers? No

Visas to enter India are currently suspended until further notice. Only essential travelers are permitted entry into the country. All travelers seeking entry to India must quarantine upon arrival. Quarantine requirements vary based on the destination in India.

 

Indonesia

Open to American Travelers? No

Indonesia remains closed off to all foreign visitors until further notice. 

 

Ireland

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine. 

U.S. citizens are allowed to travel to Ireland – with a lengthy quarantine. But that will soon change.

According to the U.S. Embassy, any traveler arriving in Ireland is required to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival. They are also required to complete a COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form indicating where they will self-isolate. A negative COVID-19 test result must be held that was taken 72 hours prior to travel.

Starting on July 19, travelers are welcome back into Ireland without quarantine if they are fully vaccinated, have a negative COVID-19 test, or have fully recovered from COVID-19.

 

Israel

Open to American Travelers? No

Most U.S. citizens are still not permitted entry. Isreal is hoping to fully reopen to individual vaccinated tourists in July.

 

Italy

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Americans can enter Italy as long as they have proof of vaccination, a recent negative COVID-19 test (taken within 48 hours of departure), or proof of full recovery from COVID-19.

Jamaica

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Jamaica reopened its borders to tourists on June 15, 2020. All U.S. travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days prior to their flight to Jamaica.

Japan

Open to American Travelers? No

Japan still bans travel from most countries, including the United States.

Jordan

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival. A PCR test is also required upon arrival at the traveler’s own expense, about $40 U.S. dollars.

K

Kenya

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if they do not have a temperature over 99.5 F, do not have a cough or flu-like symptoms, and have a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours before travel.

L

Laos

Open to American Travelers? No

All borders in Laos remain closed until further notice.

 

Lebanon

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

Travelers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 96 hours before arrival. A PCR test is also required within 72 hours of arrival at the traveler’s own expense. (about $50 U.S. dollars). Vaccinated travelers will not need to test on arrival. 

M

Madagascar

Open to American Travelers? No

There are screening procedures in place at key ports of entry to Madagascar. Travelers from countries with confirmed cases of COVID-19 may be required to undergo a 14-day quarantine. U.S. citizens are still not permitted entry. 

 

Malaysia

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens can’t enter Malaysia until further notice.

 

Maldives

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Fully vaccinated travelers are free to enter the Maldives with no additional requirements.

All other travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken no more than 96 hours prior to their scheduled departure. 

 

Malta

Open to American Travelers? Only in Certain Circumstances

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry unless they have spent 14 days in a corridor country approved by Malta prior to travel.

 

Martinique

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry into Martinique until further notice. 

 

Mexico

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Air travel to Mexico is open, with no restrictions or entry requirements. Passengers arriving at Mexican airports may be subject to health screenings including temperature checks.

 

Montenegro

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if they have negative COVID-19 results from a test taken no more than 72 hours before travel.

 

Morocco

Open to American Travelers? Yes

According to the U.S. embassy in Morocco, U.S. citizens are allowed entry if they have hotel reservations or tours booked with travel agencies. Travelers entering Morocco must complete a COVID-19 test within 72 hours before travel with negative results.

 

Mozambique

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before departure.

N

Namibia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than seven days before travel.

 

Nepal

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine.

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with a negative COVID-19 taken no more than 72 hours prior to departure and must undergo a 10-day quarantine. 

 

Netherlands

Open to American Travelers? Yes

The Netherlands will begin allowing U.S. citizens on June 24. There is no testing required and no need to provide proof of vaccination status for travelers coming from “safe countries”, including the U.S. Travelers will need to fill out a health declaration form which most airlines will provide digitally when they check-in for your flight.

 

New Zealand

Open to American Travelers? No

Most foreign travelers cannot enter New Zealand until further notice.

Nicaragua 

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with proof of negative COVID-19 test results on arrival.

 

Nigeria

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. travelers are permitted entry with proof of negative COVID-19 test results taken no more than four days before arrival. A mandatory seven-day quarantine is required for all travelers.

 

North Macedonia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are welcome in North Macedonia. There are currently no requirements for a COVID-19 test or a quarantine. Social distancing measures remain in place throughout the country.

 

Norway

Open to American Travelers? No

All travelers from the European and Schengen countries with acceptable levels of COVID-19 infection can travel to Norway. U.S. citizens are still not welcome until further notice.

 

O

Oman

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with quarantine requirements

The Omani government has reopened its borders to U.S. citizens  Travelers must provide negative COVID-19 test results taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival. A seven-day quarantine is required with a second COVID-19 test to exit quarantine.

 

P

Panama

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Panama began welcoming back all tourists as of Oct. 12, 2020. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival must be presented for entry. A rapid COVID-19 test is available at the airport at the traveler’s own expense.

 

Paraguay

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted to enter Paraguay if they present a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of travel.  Travelers with proof of previous COVID-19 infection in the last 14-90 days also can also enter.

 

Peru

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

A negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival is required. 

All travelers arriving in Peru must quarantine for 14 days either at their home, or a government-run isolation center or at their lodging, after coordination with Peruvian health authorities. This quarantine can be waived if travelers test negative upon arrival in Peru.

Philippines

Open to American Travelers? No

Only citizens and permanent residents are allowed entry into the country until further notice.

 

Poland

Open to American Travelers? No

Polish citizens and citizens of other European countries are allowed entry, according to the U.S. embassy. Americans and other foreigners are not allowed entry.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Poland, to implement that change.

 

Portugal

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Portugal is one of the latest countries to welcome back travelers.

All travelers 2 years and older must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours of departure – or a negative rapid antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure. Travelers with proof of recovery from a COVID-19 infection within the last 90 days can also enter Portugal.

Qatar

Open to American Travelers? No

Non-citizens and non-residents are not permitted entry until further notice.

R

Russia

Open to American Travelers? No

Russian borders remain closed to all foreigners until further notice.

 

Romania

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine.

The borders are open to U.S. travelers but results of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of vaccination must be provided to enter. A 14-day quarantine is required for most travelers.

 

Rwanda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All travelers regardless of nationality will be allowed entry. Travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken with 72 hours of departure. They must also take another COVID-19 test upon arrival at the international airport with results available within 8-24 hours. Travelers must stay quarantined at their hotel until results are in.

Saint Barths

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of June 9, 2021, some Americans and other travelers are allowed to head back for St. Barths, according to its embassy.

Visitors from most countries, including the U.S., must provide proof of vaccination and a recent negative COVID-19 test to get in.

 

Saint Kitts and Nevis

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of June 12, only vaccinated travelers are welcome to St. Kitts, according to the Saint Kitts Tourism Authority. Unvaccinated children under 18 are also welcome.

 

Saint Lucia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Sint Maarten

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are allowed entry into Sint Maarten with a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 120 hours of arrival. You also must complete a health declaration online prior to arrival. Passengers are required to wear masks in the airport at all times and are subject to temperature and health screenings.

 

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travelers were again welcomed on July 1, 2020. Passengers must have negative COVID-19 test results within five days prior to arrival. You will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival at the international airport and be required to quarantine for 24 hours while awaiting the results. Travelers from high-risk countries must quarantine for the first five days and will be retested at that point.

 

Saudi Arabia

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens with residence permits (iqamas) may enter the country. However, tourist visa holders are not permitted entry until further notice.

 

Senegal

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Arriving passengers must present a COVID-19 test certificate showing a negative result taken within five days before entry into Senegal.

 

Serbia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All foreigners are required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival.

 

Seychelles

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All travelers are allowed entry with a negative COVID-19 test result taken 72 hours prior to travel.

 

Sierra Leone

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with negative COVID-19 test results taken within seven days of departure. Testing on arrival is also required and will cost travelers $80.

 

Singapore

Open to American Travelers? No

Singapore remains closed to most non-citizens and non-residents.

 

Slovakia

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry into Slovakia unless their travel is deemed essential until further notice.

 

Slovenia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

American citizens are currently allowed entry into Slovenia. They must have proof of being fully vaccinated or provide negative COVID-19 test results.

 

South Africa

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Most travelers, including U.S. citizens, are allowed to enter South Africa.

Visitors are required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival. 

 

United Cape Town

 

South Korea

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are allowed entry into South Korea but there is currently a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. Travelers will be placed at a government-run facility at their own expense for 14 days, costing approximately $100-$150 USD per night.

 

Spain

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are now permitted entry into Spain if they are fully vaccinated. Travelers need to show proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to travel. They will also need to upload a QR code generated through Spain’s Health Portal.

 

Sri Lanka

Open to American Travelers? No

All international airports in Sri Lanka remain closed and a date has not been set for re-opening.

 

Sweden

Open to American Travelers? No

Sweden is following recommendations from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from certain countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry.

But that could change soon, as the European Union lifts its yearlong travel ban on U.S. residents. It’s up to individual countries across Europe, including Sweden, to implement that change.

 

Switzerland

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Switzerland is set to reopen its borders to travelers as of June 28, 2021, Swiss tourism authorities have announced.

Vaccinated visitors will be allowed to enter Switzerland without quarantine or additional testing requirements. Unvaccinated minors up to 18 years old will be allowed to accompany their vaccinated guardians.

All travelers must fill out an online health form prior to entry.

Taiwan

Open to American Travelers? No

Foreign nationals are not allowed entry into Taiwan unless you hold an Alien Resident Certificate or have official forms proving you meet entry standards.

 

Tanzania

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Tanzania’s borders are open for international travelers. Travelers are required to provide negative results of a COVID-19 taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

 

Thailand

Open to American Travelers? No

Most travelers, including U.S. citizens, are banned from entering Thailand for tourism until further notice. Thai authorities have announced their hopes of reopening tourism by mid-October.

 

Togo

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Passengers arriving in Lome (LFW) must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of travel. They may also be subject to a mandatory COVID-19 test at the airport on arrival.

 

Trinidad and Tobago

Open to American Travelers? No

Borders are closed until further notice.

 

Turkey

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Turkey’s borders are open to tourists. After months with no testing requirements, all travelers must now present a negative PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival. 

 

Turks and Caicos

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than five days before arrival. Strict social distancing measures remain in place.

Uganda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted entry with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival.

 

Ukraine

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are may enter if they have negative COVID-19 test results taken within 72 hours of travel or proof of being fully vaccinated.

 

United Arab Emirates

Open to American Travelers? Yes

You must produce a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours before boarding a flight to Dubai (DXB).  You must also report any symptoms and have valid medical travel insurance. 

 

United Kingdom

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

The U.K. has implemented a mandatory 10-day quarantine for arrivals from most countries, and visitors will have to test negative for COVID-19 twice to exit quarantine. Talks about setting up a travel corridor between the U.S. and U.K. are underway.

Uruguay

Open to American Travelers? No

Borders will remain closed to most U.S. citizens until further notice.

 

U.S. Virgin Islands

Open to American Travelers? Yes

It may not be a foreign country, but the U.S. Virgin Islands are open for tourism. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than five days before travel must be presented upon arrival. Temperature checks and health screenings will also be administered on arrival. No return testing is required for U.S. before their flight back to the mainland.

There is still no word on when Vietnamese borders may open to most travelers.

Zambia

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

Tourists will be permitted entry if they can present a negative COVID-19 test result that was conducted less than 72 hours prior to arrival.

 

Zimbabwe

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Zimbabwe borders are have reopened to travelers. All arriving passengers must have a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival.
