Editor’s note: This post will be regularly updated with new information about travel restrictions and news. It was last updated on Feb. 21, 2021.
Are you dreaming of brighter days when you can explore the world again? Same.
Even if you’re ready to travel again, many countries around the globe have locked down, banning most (if not all) international tourists – especially Americans. But it’s constantly changing. Slowly but surely, countries around the globe have lifted travel bans while others have imposed new restrictions that could make it trickier to get in.
But now international travel for Americans is about to get even harder. Starting Jan. 26, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will require all travelers heading to the U.S. to present a negative COVID-19 test before boarding a flight – including citizens returning from abroad.
That means you may have to get tested before heading off on your international trip and will be required to get a test before heading back home.Tests must be taken no more than 72 hours before departure, and be provided to the airline in paper or electronic form. Only children younger than 2 and travelers transiting through the U.S. en route to their final destination will be exempt.
So when will international travel resume? Here’s a look around the globe, organized alphabetically (click below to jump!)

You’ve left out much of sub Saharan Africa, including all of West Africa, with the exception of Nigeria. Many of those countries have well publicized travel restrictions/border closings
Thank you for your comments. I’ve made some additions.
Please add info on Indonesia (Specifically Bali) to your list when updating.
Hey David. I’ve added some information on Indonesia and Bali.
Sint Maarten?
Hey Rosalyn. I’ve added some information on Sint Maarten.
Please add on USA coming back from Europe
Switzerland is planning to open their boarders on the 15th of june too
Canada is only allowing citizens and residents along with their intimidate families, temporary workers and students into the country regardless of where they are coming from.
How about travel within Canada
I want to travel from Ontario to bc
Hi!
You left out Honduras….
Hey Angie, I’ve added some information on Honduras.
You missed the country of Guatemala… what about them?
Hey Nancy, I’ve added some information on Guatemala.
You have left Brazil Portugal and Mozambique
Thank you Sertorio. I’ve made some updates.
Not quite accurate on Sint Maarten. Some flights are going in and out and there actually is a repatriation flight schedule for June 3 with United which still has seats available. Other flights are scheduled but whether they actually fly or get cancelled remains to be seen. Also spelling mistake in text. The Shelter in Place was lightened but not completely lifted until end May and curfew still remains in effect 11pm – 5am. Border between French and Dutch side is scheduled to re-open June 2nd.
Thank you, Rosalyn. I’ve made some updates.
THANK YOU for this extremely helpful article–both for personal and business travel! You are the best!
Thank you, Janice! We’re happy this helps. 🙂
Interesting the USA is omitted. Obviously for domestic readers only.
I agree. This list is very helpful, but could you include the US, and Hawaii with its own special conditions? Also, I understand Ethiopia is now a travel hub for much of Africa, and would be a good one to include.
Jon- MY husband and I like to travel internationly-your column and travel knowledge is greatly appreciated! Cherrie Z
Hi Jon… excellent updates and very much appreciated. I’m hoping to make it to Brisbane/Queensland Australia in a timely fashion though a second surge of COVID in Victoria and New South Wales plus the ongoing problems here in the United States are sure to close the country to U.S. travelers for months.
I have a friend who left to see his girlfriend from Minneapolis MN USA to Oslo Norway last Wednesday July 15th. He’s staying for 1 month has to self quarantine for 10 days but he didn’t have to have a test preformed before he left.
Scotland?
Hey Patty. Scotland is part of the section on the U.K. The restrictions are very similar for all of those nations.
This is a great resource. One thing I want to flag is that it looks like you use the term “US citizens” pretty widely in the document, but many of the restrictions (including the EU member states) are in fact residency based – so for example, a Canadian citizen living in the United States would not be eligible to enter the EU, but a US citizen living in Canada would.
(Source: https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-9208-2020-INIT/en/pdf “When deciding whether the temporary restriction on non-essential travel to the EU applies to a third-country national, residence in a third country for which the restrictions on non- essential travel have been lifted should be the determining factor (and not nationality).”)
Also, a minor correction to the Mexico section: nonessential travel at land crossings remains banned, but there have never been any restrictions on air travel between the US and Mexico and flights between the two countries never stopped.
Hi! I am wondering if you are planning to update this post regularly so we can keep and up to date account on travel in the up and coming months? I’m hoping to travel December or January so it would be great to have this to review week by week!! Thank you!
Hi Amanda, we update this post several times a week!
Oh perfect, thank you! The top of the page just says last updated on July 29 so that’s why I asked ☺️
Hello- I don’t think your Hungary regulations are correct. US Citizens are not allowed. The two negative Covid tests is for Hungarian citizens who don’t want to quarantine for 14 days.
Thank you, Jackie! I’ve updated that information.
Your article is dated today but I understand that both Colombia and Panamá are opening some airport to international flights.
According to the U.S. embassy in both countries, both international airports are closed until further notice. I’ll be sure to make the appropriate updates when any changes occur. Thank you!
Do you have information for Bonaire?
Hey Mike. I’ve added information for Bonaire.
Thank you for this information. It is so helpful. Would you add Saudi Arabia (RUH) specifically to your list? As of now they are closed but say possibly opening in January.
Hey Jacqueline. I’ve added information on Saudi Arabia. Thank you for pointing that out!
Have you heard of any countries updating their policies for people that have been vaccinated?
Hey Andy. I have not heard of this for any country at the moment. I’ll be sure to update this list as we learn more!
Hello Jon,
Do you have any information on when Israel will reopen to tourists? I have airline tickets for this Spring and am not sure of rebooking again (for the 3rd time). Thanks, in advance, for any information you can provide!
Hey Margarita. I have not heard any news on a potential reopening date for Israel. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on it and update our information when I see any changes!
Hi,
Are the Azores open to US citizens? Such as the city of Madeira
Hey Judy,
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal and follow very similar restrictions. I’ll be sure to update anything new I see regarding this!
What about the united states allowing tourists from other countries?
Hey Micaela,
Information regarding travelers entering the U.S. has been added to the top of this post.
