Always Have USPS Hold Mail While You’re on Vacation
When Mrs. TT and I go on an extended vacation, we always have the United States Postal Service (USPS) hold our mail. When you hold your mail it’s kept safely at the post office. You don’t want to have your mailbox overflowing with junk mail, which makes your home an easy target for thieves. There is no cost to holding your mail, so it’s really a no brainer.
How To Do It
First, decide how long you’d like to hold your mail. Then visit USPS.com and fill out the online hold mail form. It only takes two minutes and you’ll be on your way. You can schedule the hold for up to 30 days, and you must give at least a day notice to start the hold. We also recommend that you try to be home the day they deliver all your mail, as it can be a big bundle.
If you’re going to be gone for more than 30 days, the USPS does offer a Premium Forwarding Service. It has a fee but at least you’ll have peace of mind knowing your mail is safe. Another option would be to forward all your mail to a friend or family member. There is a small fee (around $1), but it’s a simple solution as well.
The USPS offers plenty of cheap options to protect your mail while you’re away from home. There is no reason to let your mail pile up and make your home a potential target. Have the USPS hold mail the next time you are on vacation.
