Delta announced today they will be launching nonstop service from Minneapolis to Rome (FCO), and Detroit (DTW) to Munich (MUC) on May 26 and will continue daily service through the peak summer months ending in September or October. This is great news for anyone trying to get to Rome or Munich from Minneapolis or the midwest in general. More flights equal more award availability.
Finding cheap SkyMiles redemptions to Rome or Munich was tough before and it should hopefully be easier now. I know I've been planning a trip to Oktoberfest for 2016 and I'm crossing my fingers that the direct Detroit flights will be available until early October.
Nonstop Service from Minneapolis to Rome
This route will feature the 226 seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft for the flights to and from Italy.
Flight Number | Departure | Arrival | Start Date |
DL 90 | MSP 5:25pm | FCO 10am (next day) | 26-May-16 |
DL 91 | FCO 11:45am | MSP 3:45pm | 27-May-16 |
I did a quick check on flights direct from MSP to FCO and there is awesome award availability at only 60k SkyMiles round-trip. This flight sells for $1993 so this is a hell of a deal. This kind of availability is rare and will probably disappear in the next few weeks as flights fill up.
Nonstop service from Detroit to Munich
This route will feature the 246 seat Boeing 767-400ER aircraft for the flights to and from Munich.
Flight Number | Departure | Arrival | Start Date |
DL 23 | DTW 7:55pm | MUC 10:45am (next day) | 26-May-16 |
DL 22 | MUC 12:30pm | DTW 4pm | 27-May-16 |
I did a quick check on flights direct from DTW to MUC, and it's also wide open for award availability at only 60k SkyMiles. It's best to book ASAP before this award space disappears.
The real value play for both new routes is the ability to fly round-trip in Delta One (Business Class) for 125k SkyMiles. Availability looks wide open for both routes.
Thrifty Tip: You can also fly one-way in Delta One for only 62.5k SkyMiles if you don't have enough miles. I highly recommend one-way awards as availability is generally easier to find.
Both routes are a great addition to the Delta network to Europe and should make it easier to get to your destination of choice. I know I will be taking advantage of both routes in the near future. Book soon before flights fill up and all the cheap award space disappears!
