When Will International Travel Reopen? A Country-by-Country Guide

Are you dreaming of brighter days when you can explore the world again? Same.

Even if you’re ready to travel again, many countries around the globe have locked down, banning most (if not all) international tourists – especially Americans. But it’s constantly changing. And slowly but surely, countries around the globe have begun lifting travel restrictions.

Most recently, Costa Rica announced it will welcome all tourists starting Nov. 1 with no testing requirements. But elsewhere, health screenings, COVID-19 testing requirements, and restrictions on who is allowed to enter could make travel much more complicated.

A

Albania

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Commercial flights returned to Albania on June 15. There are very few restrictions and no quarantines required for most travelers. 

 

Anguilla

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if their Visitor Application Form is accepted. They must have negative COVID-19 test results within five days of arrival. And even then, a 10-day quarantine is required in a government-approved facility.

 

Antigua & Barbuda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than seven days before arrival.  All passengers must wear a mask during disembarkation and at all times in public during their stay. Travelers must also complete a Health Declaration Form and will be subjected to health screenings on arrival. 

 

Argentina

Open to American Travelers? No

Anyone who is not a resident of Argentina will not be permitted entrance. The U.S. Embassy has no estimated date for an end to this travel ban. 

 

Aruba

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Aruba started allowing U.S. citizens to enter the country in July. But just what it takes to get in will depend upon where you’re coming from.

To enter Aruba, you must do the following:

  • Provide basic traveler information
  • Complete a traveler health assessment
  • Negative COVID-19 PCR test result within 3 days of departure
  • Purchase travel insurance from Aruba’s government for $10 per day

Travelers from many states will be able to provide a negative PCR test result prior to departure or taking a test upon arrival. But others from select states with high coronavirus case counts won’t have the option to take a test upon arrival – they’ll be required to upload a negative test result at least 72 hours before departure.

Travelers must also have health insurance that covers medical expenses while traveling, which costs around $10 per day.

 

Australia

Open to American Travelers? No

Australia has banned all non-residents and non-citizens from entering the country, and even Australian residents are banned from traveling abroad. The country has given no indication of when these policies may end. 

There are hints at opening a travel corridor across the Tasman Sea with New Zealand.

Austria

Open to American Travelers? No

Austria is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from select countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

B

The Bahamas

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry into the Bahamas but must submit a Travel Health Visa Application which will require a negative COVID-19 test result. Testing must be performed within five days of travel. Children under 10 do not need to present test results. All travelers must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine (or the duration of their stay) upon arrival. Once you arrive at your hotel, resort, or Airbnb, you are required to stay there for the duration of your visit. If you are quarantining in a hotel you can make use of all of the facilities in the hotel. This quarantine will be removed starting Nov. 1, 2020.

 

Bangladesh

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry into Bangladesh if they have a negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours of travel. A mandatory 14-day quarantine is required for arriving passengers.

 

Barbados

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Barbados officially reopened to travelers on July 12. U.S. citizens must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival.

Travelers from high-risk countries, including the U.S., will have a mandatory quarantine for 14 days with the option to take a COVID-19 test after five days. If this test is negative they will be free from quarantine.

 

Belarus

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are allowed entry and there are very few restrictions with no quarantines required.

 

Belgium

Open to American Travelers? No

Belgium is generally following guidance from the European Union. Countries that are not part of the EU or the Schengen area are not permitted entry for non-essential travel. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Belize

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of October 1, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter. A negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of travel is required. You will need to download the Belize Health App. and complete the required information. You must stay at an approved Gold Standard Hotel and your transportation to this hotel must also be approved by Gold Standard operators. 

 

Bermuda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers have been welcomed back to Bermuda since July 1. Visitors must obtain a certificate for a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of departure. They must also have appropriate health insurance.

 

Bolivia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

According to the Bolivian embassy, U.S. citizens are permitted entry into Bolivia if they have a negative COVID-19 test result within seven days of travel. Temperature checks and health screenings will be in place at international airports.

 

Bonaire

Open to American Travelers? No

Travelers who have been physically present in the United States within the past 14 days will not be allowed to enter Bonaire until further notice.

 

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours of arrival.

 

Brazil

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Foreigners are permitted to travel to Brazil by air. Travelers must provide proof of purchase of health insurance valid in Brazil with coverage that lasts their entire stay.

The U.S. Embassy in Brazil is not recommending U.S. citizens travel to Brazil because of the high number of COVID-19 cases.
 

Bulgaria

Open to American Travelers? No

The borders are closed to most foreign citizens until further notice.

 

C

Cambodia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry but must pay a deposit of $2000 on arrival for mandatory COVID-19 testing and potential medical services. Travelers must possess negative COVID-19 test results issued within 72 hours of arrival. Health insurance must also be purchased for $90 that will cover 20 days in the country.

All visitors will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days even if they’ve tested negative on arrival.

 

Canada

Open to American Travelers? No

Canada and the U.S. have agreed to extend the ban on non-essential travel across the border through at least November 21. Travelers entering Canada must present a valid 14-day quarantine plan until further notice. 

 

Cayman Islands

Open to American Travelers? No

The Cayman Islands remain closed to most travelers. The international airport reopened on October 1, but only students with a visa to study, people with ties to families or residents, or work permit holders are permitted entry. A phased reopening is set to take place over the next few months.

 

Chile

Open to American Travelers? No

Chile’s borders remain closed for foreigners. All foreigners and Chileans entering Chile are subject to a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine. Check here for updates.

China

Open to American Travelers? No

China is still closed to most travelers but has recently opened its borders to European travelers.

 

Colombia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of Sept. 19, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter. A negative COVID-19 test result taken within 96 hours of travel is required.

 

Costa Rica

Open to American Travelers? Yes.

Costa Rica slowly opened its borders over the summer and fall, letting in tourists from a handful of countries and then visitors from select U.S. states starting in September.

Come Nov. 1, all U.S. citizens and residents will be allowed to travel to Costa Rica. And beginning Oct. 26, the country will eliminate its requirement for a negative COVID-19 test for entry, according to the Costa Rica Tourism Board.

Travelers will need to fill out a “Health Pass” form and have travel insurance with medical coverage for entry.

 

Cote d’Ivoire

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Air travel is now authorized. Travelers arriving at the international airport are required to fill out an air travel declaration form as well as follow all health measures related to travel.

 

Croatia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All foreign nationals, including U.S. citizens, can enter Croatia for business, tourism, or other pressing personal reasons if they provide the relevant proof.

But there is a big hitch: You need to present a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival.

 

Cuba

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

When international flights resume travelers must present negative COVID-19 test results. Also a mandatory quarantine in a government facility may be required for all incoming travelers.

 

Curaçao

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Only residents from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut can enter Curaçao at this time. They will need negative COVID-19 PCR test results taken within 72 hours of arrival. Travelers from these states will be required to present a state-issued ID as proof of residency.

 

Cyprus

Open to American Travelers? Only in Certain Circumstances

Cyrpus is generally following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from 15 countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry unless they have spent 14 days in a country permitted by Cyprus prior to travel. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Czech Republic

Open to American Travelers? No

The Czech Republic is following recommendations from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from certain countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

Denmark

Open to American Travelers? No

Denmark is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from approved countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries will be updated every two weeks.

 

Dominica

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. Travelers from high-risk countries, including the U.S., will have a mandatory quarantine at a government-approved facility with the option to take a COVID-19 test after five days. If this test is negative, travelers will be free from quarantine.

 

Dominican Republic

Open to American Travelers? Yes

There are no COVID-19 testing requirements but authorities will administer random quick breath tests to 3%-10% of arriving passengers.

Also, tourists visiting a hotel will be granted a temporary, free travel assistance plan that will include coverage for emergencies, COVID-19 testinglodging for prolonged stays and the cost for changing flights in the event of an infection. This insurance will be provided at no cost to the visitor until December 31, 2020 and will be 100% paid for by the Dominican State.

Ecuador

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All arriving passengers must have the results for a COVID-19 test in the last 10 days prior to arrival, or they will be tested at the airport on arrival.

For travelers looking to continue on to the Galapagos Islands, they must have taken a PCR test with a negative result within 96 hours of entry into Galapagos province. The test may be the same one used to enter Ecuador via Guayaquil (GYE) or Quito (UIO) airports, so long as it was administered within 96 hours of entry into Galapagos province.

 

Egypt

Open to American Travelers? Yes

While borders are open to all citizens, a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours prior to arrival must be presented. Health screenings and temperature checks will be administered upon arrival.

 

El Salvador

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

As of Sept. 19, U.S. citizens are allowed to enter El Salvador. COVID-19 test results are not required to enter, but U.S. citizens are subject to a mandatory 15-day quarantine or a time period that the Ministry of Health recommends.

 

Estonia

Open to American Travelers? No

Estonia is joining the group of countries following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from a handful of countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Ethiopia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travelers arriving by air will not need specific documentation related to COVID-19 to enter or exit Ethiopia. However, arriving passengers at Addis Ababa (ADD) will be subjected to COVID-19 screenings. Travelers will also be subject to a 14-day quarantine period at a designated hotel or quarantine center at their own expense.

Fiji

Open to American Travelers? No

Fiji’s airport remains closed and the country is slowly reopening activities on the islands. There are talks with New Zealand and Australia about opening a “travel bubble” which would allow entry between citizens of all three countries. 

 

Finland

Open to American Travelers? No

The Government of Finland is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from several countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

France

Open to American Travelers? No

France is following recommendations from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from a handful of countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

French Polynesia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

As of July 15, travelers have been allowed entry but they must have a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours before departure. Four days after arrival, travelers will be tested again. Social distancing measures will remain in place and wearing a mask is mandatory throughout your stay.

Georgia

Open to American Travelers? No

The borders are closed to most foreign citizens until further notice.

 

Germany

Open to American Travelers? No

Only allowing visitors from several countries and the EU may visit Germany for the time being. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Ghana

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed to enter if they have a negative COVID-19 test result conducted within 72 hours of departure. Each passenger arriving in Ghana over the age of 5 will be required to take another COVID-19 test at the airport at their own expense ($150). Test results are available within 30 minutes and no quarantine will be required for those who test negative.

 

Greece

Open to American Travelers? No

Greece is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from several countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

Grenada

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens will be allowed entry into Grenada. A negative COVID-19 test result is required within seven days of departure. U.S. citizens will need to remain in quarantine at their accommodation for four days. On day 4, travelers can take a COVID-19 test and if results are negative they are allowed into the community.

 

Guatemala

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are allowed to enter Guatemala if they present a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arrival.
 

H

Honduras

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Honduras reopened its borders to American tourists on Aug. 17. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours before arrival is required for entry.

 

Hong Kong

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are currently not allowed entry into Hong Kong.

 

Hungary

Open to American Travelers? No

After previously allowing U.S. citizens to enter with COVID-19 testing required, the government is now declaring that foreigners without a residence permit will be banned from entering Hungary, effective Sept. 1 until further notice.

Iceland

Open to American Travelers? No

Iceland isn’t saying when it will allow U.S. travelers. The country is following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from a few countries. That list is revisited every two weeks, but don’t count on America making the cut anytime soon.

 

India

Open to American Travelers? No

Visas to enter India are currently suspended until further notice. Only essential travelers are permitted entry into the country. All travelers seeking entry to India must quarantine upon arrival. Quarantine requirements vary based on the destination in India.

 

Indonesia

Open to American Travelers? No

Indonesia remains closed off to all foreign visitors. And officials of the popular beach destination Bali say the island won’t reopen to travel until at least 2021, Yahoo News reports. A new opening date will be determined by the government later this year.

 

Ireland

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travel from the U.S. to Ireland is allowed, but all arrivals will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days. Check the U.S. Embassy in Ireland for updates.

 

Israel

Open to American Travelers? No

Israel is refusing entry to all foreigners and non-Israeli citizens, aside from some non-nationals who live in Israel. Passengers arriving in Israel are subject to health screenings and a 14-day quarantine.

 

Italy

Open to American Travelers? No

One of the worst-hit countries by COVID-19, Italy made its way through a two-month lockdown and planned to resume travel this year.

However, Italy is now following guidance from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from several countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

Jamaica

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Jamaica reopened its borders to tourists on June 15. All U.S. travelers must present a negative COVID-19 test taken within 10 days prior to their flight to Jamaica.
 

Japan

Open to American Travelers? No

Japan still bans travel from 70 countries, including the United States. Officials are hoping to restart tourism by spring 2021. The 2020 Summer Olympics are delayed until at least 2021.
 

Jordan

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travelers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival. A PCR test is also required upon arrival at the traveler’s own expense, about $55 U.S. dollars. A 14-day quarantine is required for travelers from the U.S.

Kenya

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if they do not have a temperature over 99.5 F, do not have a cough or flu-like symptoms, and have a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours before travel.

 

L

Laos

Open to American Travelers? No

All borders remain closed until further notice.

 

Lebanon

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Travelers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 96 hours before arrival. A PCR test is also required upon arrival at traveler’s own expense, about $50 U.S. dollars. A 10-day quarantine is required for travelers from the U.S. 

 

M

Madagascar

Open to American Travelers? No

There are screening procedures in place at key ports of entry to Madagascar. Travelers from countries with confirmed cases of COVID-19 may be required to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

 

Malaysia

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens can’t enter Malaysia until at least Dec. 31, with the possibility of further extension that will be decided by the Malaysian government.

 

Maldives

Open to American Travelers? Yes

The Maldives has announced that all travelers, starting Sept. 10, will be required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival. 

 

Malta

Open to American Travelers? Only in Certain Circumstances

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry unless they have spent 14 days in a corridor country determined by Malta prior to travel.

 

Martinique

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry into Martinique until further notice. 

 

Mexico

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Air travel to Mexico is open, with no restrictions or entry requirements. Passengers arriving at Mexican airports may be subject to health screenings including temperature checks. Popular tourist areas like Los Cabos and Cancun have reopened.

 

Montenegro

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry if they have negative COVID-19 results from a test taken no more than 72 hours before travel.

 

Morocco

Open to American Travelers? Yes

According to the U.S. embassy in Morocco, U.S. citizens are allowed entry if they have hotel reservations or tours booked with travel agencies.

Travelers entering Morocco must complete a COVID-19 test within 48 hours before travel with negative results. An antibody test is also required upon entry but does not have to be taken within 48 hours of arrival.

Domestic travel within Morocco is currently prohibited to and from Berrechid, Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech, Meknes, Settat, Tangier, and Tetouan.

 

Mozambique

Open to American Travelers? No

Visas are not being issued and international passenger flights are currently suspended.
 

N

Namibia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. Travelers must also quarantine for seven days at their own expense.

 

Nepal

Open to American Travelers? No

Regular international and domestic flights are suspended until further notice.

 

Netherlands

Open to American Travelers? No

The Netherlands is now allowing visitors from select countries and citizens of EU nations. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is updated every two weeks.

 

New Zealand

Open to American Travelers? No

Most foreign travelers cannot enter New Zealand until further notice. However, there are hints at opening a travel corridor across the Tasman Sea with Australia.

Nicaragua 

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are permitted entry with proof of negative COVID-19 test results on arrival.

 

Nigeria

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. travelers are permitted entry with proof of negative COVID-19 test results taken no more than five days before arrival. A mandatory eight-day quarantine is required for all travelers.

 

North Macedonia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are welcome in North Macedonia. There are currently no requirements for a COVID-19 test or a quarantine. Social distancing measures remain in place throughout the country.

 

Norway

Open to American Travelers? No

All travelers from the European and Schengen countries with acceptable levels of COVID-19 infection can travel to Norway. U.S. citizens are still not welcome until further notice.

 

O

Oman

Open to American Travelers? No

The Omani government has suspended all tourist visas until further notice.

 

P

Panama

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Panama is again welcoming all tourists as of Oct. 12, 2020. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival must be presented for entry. A rapid COVID-19 test is available at the airport at the traveler’s own expense.

 

Paraguay

Open to American Travelers? No

Paraguay’s borders remain closed to all foreigners until further notice.

 

Peru

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens may enter Peru with a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours before travel. A mandatory 14-day quarantine remains in place.

Philippines

Open to American Travelers? No

Only citizens and permanent residents are allowed entry into the country until further notice.

 

Poland

Open to American Travelers? No

Polish citizens and citizens of other European countries are allowed entry, according to the U.S. embassy.

 

Portugal

Open to American Travelers? No

Portugal has banned the entry of U.S. citizens for non-essential travel until further notice. They are following guidance from the European Union and are only allowing visitors from select countries. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.
 

Q

Qatar

Open to American Travelers? No

 Non-citizens and non-residents are not permitted entry until further notice.

 

R

Russia

Open to American Travelers? No

Russian borders remain closed to all foreigners until further notice.

 

Romania

Open to American Travelers? No

The borders are closed to most foreign citizens until further notice.

 

Rwanda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All travelers regardless of nationality will be allowed entry. Travelers are required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken no more than 120 hours before arrival. They must also take another COVID-19 test upon arrival at the international airport with results available within 8-24 hours. Travelers must stay quarantined at their hotel until results are in.

Saint Barths

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Americans are permitted to travel to St. Barths but must provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours prior to their departure. Testing is also available upon arrival. Social distancing measures remain in effect and masks are required in public.

 

Saint Kitts and Nevis

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Saint Kitts and Nevis will begin welcoming travelers from the U.S. and elsewhere starting Oct. 31 with strict entry requirements, according to the Saint Kitts Tourism Authority.

All arriving travelers have to provide a negative COVID-19 result from a test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. Tests must be from an approved lab, which the Saint Kitts government has not yet provided. Travelers will also submit a health form, complete a health screening upon arrival, and download a contact tracing app.

International travelers must stay at one of just six approved hotels and resorts: Four Seasons Nevis; Koi Resort, by Curio, Hilton; Oualie Beach; Park Hyatt St. Kitts; Royal St. Kitts Hotel; or the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

Travelers will be required to stay at the hotel for the first seven days. On day seven, they’ll take a second COVID-19 test (for $100 USD), and a negative test will allow them to book select excursions and make certain visits outside the hotel grounds. On day 14, travelers will take a third COVID-19 test (again costing $100 USD). A negative result will allow them to move about Saint Kitts and Nevis.

 

Saint Lucia

Open to American Travelers? Yes

St. Lucia opened its borders on June 4. All travelers must have proof of a negative COVID-19 taken no more than seven days prior to departure and will be subjected to screening and temperature checks at the airport. Face masks must be worn during the duration of your stay.

 

Saint Maarten

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Starting Aug. 1, travelers from the United States have been allowed entry with a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 120 hours prior to arrival. You also must complete a health declaration online prior to arrival.  Passengers are required to wear masks in the airport at all times and are subject to temperature and health screenings.

St. Maarten warns that entry for Americans is subject to change and while U.S. citizens are currently allowed this might not continue to be the case.

 

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers were again welcomed starting July 1. Passengers must have negative COVID-19 test results within five days prior to arrival. If you don’t arrive with test results, you will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival at the international airport and be required to quarantine for 24 hours while awaiting the results.

 

Senegal

Open to American Travelers? Yes

International commercial flights resumed on July 15. Arriving passengers must present a COVID-19 test certificate showing a negative result taken within seven days before entry into Senegal. Passengers may be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival at the airport if deemed necessary by health officials. Those who test positive will need to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Open to American Travelers? Yes

All foreigners are required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival.

 

Seychelles

Open to American Travelers? No

Visitors from high-risk countries, including the U.S., are still prohibited entry until further notice. There is a list of approved countries that will be regularly updated and travelers from those countries are allowed entry with a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival.

 

Sierra Leone

Open to American Travelers? No

The international airport remains closed to all passenger flights until further notice, according to Sierra Leone’s U.S. embassy.

 

Singapore

Open to American Travelers? No

Singapore remains closed to all non-citizens and non-residents.

 

Slovakia

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are not permitted entry into Slovakia unless their travel is deemed essential until further notice.

 

Slovenia

Open to American Travelers? No

American citizens are currently not allowed entry into Slovenia unless they have residency status in the EU or their travel is deemed essential.

 

South Africa

Open to American Travelers? No

Currently, U.S. citizens are not permitted to enter South Africa.

South Africa re-opened its borders to some international travelers on Oct. 1, 2020. But countries with high COVID-19 infection and death rates will still be barred from entering. Visitors from approved countries will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival.

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

U.S. citizens are allowed entry into South Korea but there is currently a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. Travelers will be placed at a government-run facility at their own expense for 14 days, costing approximately $100-$150 USD per night.

 

Spain

Open to American Travelers? No

Spain is following recommendations from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from select countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Sri Lanka

Open to American Travelers? No

All international airports in Sri Lanka remain closed and a date has not been set for re-opening.

 

Sweden

Open to American Travelers? No

Sweden is following recommendations from the European Union and is only allowing visitors from certain countries. U.S. citizens are not permitted entry. The list of approved countries is supposed to be revisited every two weeks.

 

Switzerland

Open to American Travelers? No

On June 15, Switzerland lifted their COVID-19 related entry restrictions for travelers from other Schengen countries. U.S. citizens are still not allowed entry.

Taiwan

Open to American Travelers? No

Foreign nationals are not allowed entry into Taiwan unless you hold an Alien Resident Certificate or have official forms proving you meet entry standards. Transit through Taiwan is not allowed at the moment, either. There is no date set for reopening.

 

Tanzania

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Tanzania’s borders are open for international travelers. All passengers should fill in a Health Surveillance Form prior to arrival. Travelers are subjected to health screenings and COVID-19 testing upon arrival.

 

Thailand

Open to American Travelers? No

U.S. citizens are still banned from non-essential travel into Thailand until further notice.

 

Togo

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Passengers arriving in Lome (LFW) must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within five days of travel. They may also be subject to a mandatory COVID-19 test at the airport on arrival.

 

Trinidad and Tobago

Open to American Travelers? No

Borders are closed until further notice. Any flight will have to be approved by the minister.

 

Turkey

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Turkey’s borders are open to tourists. Arriving passengers are being examined for symptoms of COVID-19 when they land. Anyone displaying symptoms will be asked to take a test and be quarantined if positive.

 

Turks and Caicos

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Borders reopened on July 22, 2020. But you must present a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than five days before arrival. Strict social distancing measures will remain in place. Multiple flights from the U.S. on a range of carriers have resumed service.

Uganda

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Travelers are permitted entry with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken within 72 hours of arrival.

 

Ukraine

Open to American Travelers? Yes

U.S. citizens are required to enter into self-quarantine or take a COVID-19 test upon arrival at international airports. Test results are emailed within 24 hours. No quarantine or testing is required on arrival if travelers can present negative COVID-19 test results taken no more than 48 hours before travel.

 

United Arab Emirates

Open to American Travelers? Yes

Dubai opened its doors to U.S. citizens on July 7. You must produce a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 96 hours before boarding a flight to Dubai (DXB).  You must also report any symptoms and have valid medical travel insurance. Emirates has resumed operating numerous routes to and from the U.S. and around the globe.

 

United Kingdom

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

The U.K. has also been hit by coronavirus, but its borders remain open. Airports and airlines have added additional health screening procedures. The U.K. implemented a mandatory 14-day quarantine for arrivals on June 8.

Uruguay

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

While the borders remain closed to most U.S. citizens, there are certain exceptions being made by the government. If you’re traveling for family reunification purposes you’ll be permitted entry in most cases. A negative COVID-19 test is required within seven days of travel with a mandatory seven-day quarantine for all arriving passengers.

 

U.S. Virgin Islands

Open to American Travelers? Yes

The U.S. Virgin Islands reopened for tourism on Sept. 19. A negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than five days before travel must be presented upon arrival. Temperature checks and health screenings will also be administered on arrival.

Vietnam

Open to American Travelers? No

Vietnam is a rare success story. Managing to limit cases of COVID-19 to just a few hundred with no deaths, Vietnam is well on its way to reopening borders in the near future. Domestic travel has started to return and there are talks of opening a travel bubble with China and South Korea. There is still no word on when borders may open on a larger scale.

Zambia

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Tourists will be permitted entry if they can present a negative COVID-19 test result that was conducted less than 14 days prior to arrival. A mandatory 14-day quarantine is required for all incoming travelers.

 

Zimbabwe

Open to American Travelers? Yes, with a quarantine

Zimbabwe borders are have reopened to travelers. All arriving passengers must have a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival. A 14-day quarantine is required for all incoming passengers.
