Our jaws collectively hit the floor when our team of flight deal experts unearthed this gem. It's easily the best Delta SkyMiles deal of the year – maybe of all time.

Flights to Australia and New Zealand from just 25,400 SkyMiles … roundtrip! And not just on the nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to cities like Brisbane (BNE) or Auckland (AKL), but from nearly 200 U.S. cities big and small.

That's not a typo, and I didn't miss a zero – that's the cheapest SkyMiles redemption to the Land Down Under we've ever seen. Flying to Australia or New Zealand for less than many trips to New York, Chicago, or Las Vegas?! Unreal.

We sent our Thrifty Traveler Premium members a patented “unicorn” text alert and an email to book ASAP.

This deal got gobbled up within hours – get the next dirt-cheap SkyMiles deal and other award alerts with Thrifty Traveler Premium!

So what makes this deal so good? Most airlines charge 80,000 miles or more for a roundtrip to Australia – and on Delta, it's typically north of 120,000 SkyMiles. And here's the thing: Delta never advertised this sale!

Deals this hot never last long. Case in point: Delta raised rates on all but the nonstops from LA a few hours after we found this unadvertised sale – but not before hundreds of our members booked it for a bucket-list trip later this year. Without our text or email alert, you probably missed it.

As usual with these Delta deals, the cheapest rates were in Delta basic economy – with reasonable upgrades (of 12,000 to 18,000 SkyMiles) to a standard main cabin, so you can pick a seat and cancel your ticket for a full refund for free. And Delta SkyMiles cardholders get the lowest rates thanks to the automatic TakeOff 15 discount on Delta redemptions.

No matter what you booked, these were some phenomenal SkyMiles redemptions. Some of these flights were priced out at $1,500 or more, meaning you get some massive value from your SkyMiles.

Getting to Australia and back for under 30,000 SkyMiles is special on its own, but this deal is also part of an emerging trend we're tracking with Delta that has us asking the question: What is going on with Delta SkyMiles lately?

Delta's New (& Improved) SkyMiles Strategy

SkyMiles have been the butt of the joke in the world of points and miles for years. They've been written off as “worthless” – especially if you want to fly abroad in business class.

In 2026, that's changing … fast. And this deal to Australia is just the latest bit of evidence.

We're in the midst of an unprecedented run of outstanding Delta SkyMiles deals – the likes of which we haven't seen in almost a decade, maybe more. Here's just a small sample:

  • Delta One Suites to Tokyo-Haneda (HND) for under 80,000 SkyMiles each way!
  • Delta One Suites during peak summer to Rome (FCO), Venice (VCE), Dublin (DUB), Barcelona (BCN) for as low as just 97,000 SkyMiles each way
  • Plus another nonstop deal to London-Heathrow (LHR) for the same rates from both Atlanta (ATL) and Salt Lake City (SLC) â€“ two Delta hubs notorious for higher rates
  • And another one to Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland this summer, again for 97,000 SkyMiles
  • A nationwide flash sale to Taipei (TPE) for 170,000 SkyMiles roundtrip flying Delta One Suites
  • Record-low pricing for Delta One Suites on the new route to Hong Kong (HKG) – just 85,000 SkyMiles each way
  • Flying economy, you can't beat getting down to Mexico or the Bahamas for as low as 8,000 SkyMiles … roundtrip!

… all within the last six weeks or so, at a time when most flight prices have shot through the roof, and airlines have gotten much stingier with award deals. Good luck finding deals like that using other airline miles these days!

But it's not just the award rates that are improving. There are bigger changes afoot with Delta SkyMiles.

For one, Delta is rarely (if ever) advertising these flash sales anymore. What was once a somewhat steady stream of updates on its dedicated sales page and promotional email blasts to SkyMiles members has dried up.

Yet Delta hasn't stopped slashing award rates – just the opposite. The airline just isn't telling anyone anymore when it cuts the cost of booking Delta One to Europe, Tokyo, or Hong Kong to a fraction of the normal rates.

We spot it anyway and let our Thrifty Traveler Premium members know.

But it's not just the frequency of these deals that has improved. It's the depth: Increasingly, you can snag a solid deal with these SkyMiles flash sales from virtually any airport in the country.

That's a major change. For many years, Delta would typically slash rates from just a handful of major airports – think major outposts like New York City (JFK) or Boston (BOS) – as well as the hubs of American Airlines and United, where Delta might hope to poach some passengers with a low price.

Now, the Delta hub penalty – for years, the airline has typically charged higher rates from its biggest hubs – is fading away. And you can increasingly bank on a deal from secondary and even small regional airports at the same (or just slightly higher) rates as the nonstop. That's new, too.

Honestly, we're not sure what Delta's up to with these positive changes … but we are here for it. And we're finding more deals than ever.

Bottom Line

This crazy deal to Australia is proof: Against all odds, SkyMiles are changing for the better.

Maybe 15-plus hours in an economy seat isn't your cup of tea, but you can't deny that forking over just 25,000 SkyMiles and change for a roundtrip to Australia is special. It's just the latest piece of evidence that Delta is rethinking its SkyMiles strategy … and you should, too.
