Qatar Airways Qsuites is the pinnacle of business class travel. From its world-class lounges (yes, lounges … plural) at its hub in Doha (DOH) to what's arguably the most comfortable seat and best service in the sky, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better travel experience than this.

If that all sounds good to you, I've got some bad news: It does for everyone else, too. That's why Qsuites is so exceptionally hard to book for North American travelers. But if you have the right points and miles – and look in the right places – it's not impossible to treat yourself to Qsuites this year or next.

So what's the key to finding these stellar deals? It's constantly searching all of Qatar's routes. Sounds like a lot of work, right? It is. Our team of a dozen flight deal analysts searches 24/7 for our Thrifty Traveler Premium flight deal alert subscribers, making sure we don't miss a thing.

And when we do find one of these elusive Qsuites deals, it's genuinely one of the most satisfying parts of the job. Here's a look at some of the best availability we've spotted recently.

2 Recent Gems: Wide-Open Qsuites Availability & 1 Stellar Cash Deal

Qsuites deals are hard to find – plain and simple. If you follow one specific playbook in particular (more on that later), you can (almost) reliably find some award space to fly Qsuites, but with everyone using the same tactic, it can still be a crapshoot.

Because these deals are so rare and coveted, we check Qsuites availability several times a day for our Thrifty Traveler Premium flight deal alert subscribers. In the last month, we found two exceptional ways to book Qatar Qsuites, including one deal that our Chief Flight Deal Analyst, Jon, booked for himself and his wife. (Sometimes we get high on our own supply!)

The deal Jon and dozens more of our alert subscribers booked offered wide-open availability from Philadelphia (PHL) to Doha (DOH) and beyond, for just 70,000 Avios each way.

When we sent the alert, there was a 30% transfer bonus from Citi ThankYou Points to Qatar, meaning you only needed 54,000 Citi points to book those 70,000-point seats!

So, if Qsuites availability is so rare, how did we find wide-open availability from January through May? The route was brand new – that's how. Qatar added a new daily nonstop flight to Philadelphia (PHL), replacing its partner American Airlines' own PHL-DOH flight. That meant Qatar loaded hundreds of flights into the schedule with completely empty seat maps, triggering widespread availability you'd otherwise never find.

Two years ago, the same thing happened when Qatar added a new daily nonstop flight to Toronto (YYZ). So next time Qatar announces a new route, be ready!

Are you low on points and still want to fly Qsuites? Normally, I would say you're either out of luck or very, very rich. (In which case, why are you reading a site called Thrifty Traveler?) But for those willing to book with cash, we found what may be the cheapest Qsuite fare from the U.S. we've ever seen just last week.

ORD Qsuites deal

This fare was bookable on many dates between February and May, flying from only Chicago (ORD) to Mumbai (BOM) for $2,871 roundtrip – a flight that normally costs more than $7,000!

Thanks to our team of 10 full-time flight deal analysts, we caught this fare and sent it to our Thrifty Traveler Premium deal alert subscribers so they could book right away.

The Key to Booking Qsuites: 361 Days in Advance

With Qsuites, booking as soon as possible is an absolute necessity these days … like, almost a full year in advance. Literally, the difference between booking a flight a full 361 days in advance and 350 days or so can make or break your potential Qsuites trip. In some cases, it comes down to the hour – more on that later!

While booking for 70,000 American AAdvantage miles and a few bucks in fees has long been the go-to way to score these suites, that's getting much harder to do. Why? Because travelers using British Airways or Qatar Airways Avios have probably already booked them. It's all about timing. But let's back up.

Most U.S. airlines only allow you to book flights up to 11 months in advance. But with many international carriers, you've got a booking window of a full year (give or take a few days) in advance.

  • Booking through American Airlines, you can book flights up to 331 days in advance
  • Book through British Airways, you can book flights up to 355 days in advance
  • With Qatar and using Qatar Avios, the booking window is 361 days in advance

In the cutthroat, first-dibs world of booking Qsuites, those extra three-plus weeks have become absolutely critical – especially if you're on the hunt for two or more seats. In fact, we'd argue booking through Qatar itself is perhaps the only way to reliably book a pair of Qsuites award tickets these days. Those extra six days are crucial.

Based on our research (and constant searching for Thrifty Traveler Premium members…), the sweet spot seems to be booking 360 days or more in advance – right when flights open for booking. Lately, it can come down to the hour: Qatar releases award space for those flights 361 days out at 3 a.m. Doha time – 7 p.m. ET the day prior here in the U.S.

The one exception? From mid-December through mid-January every year, it's nearly impossible to book Qsuites. Clearly, the airline decides it doesn't want to do points and miles fanatics any favors over the busy holiday season.

You can also book Qsuites on the nonstop flights between the U.S. and Doha (DOH) with British Airways for 70,000 Avios, just like Qatar. But because those flights only pop up 355 days in advance, those can easily get gobbled up early by travelers redeeming Qatar Avios instead.

You'll pay more in fees booking with either Avios program compared to AAdvantage miles: about $235 for nonstop flights and more than $300 if you're making a connection. And you'll wind up using more miles, too, if you head somewhere else other than Doha.

But considering booking with Avios nearly 12 full months in advance often means the difference between finding the Qsuites you want … or nothing at all because they've already been booked, that's a small price to pay.

Plus, the rates when booking Qatar Qsuites with a connection are still reasonable – especially when booking through Qatar itself:

  • Flying to Middle Eastern destinations like Dubai (DXB), Abu Dhabi (AUH), or Muscat (MCT) costs 75,000 miles.
  • Other destinations like Amman (AMM) and Cairo (CAI), as well as major Indian cities, go up to 80,000 miles each way.
  • Getting to the Seychelles (SEZ) or the Maldives (MLE) will run you 85,000 miles each way.
  • Both Southeast Asia and South Africa typically cost 95,000 miles each way.

2 Annoying New Rules to Be Aware Of

Booking with Qatar Avios is your best bet at securing Qsuites seats, but that program has two relatively new rules that you need to know about … and you should act on both right now.

First, Avios requires your account to be open for 30 days before you can transfer Avios between accounts. This is how you can turn your British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, or Finnair Avios into Qatar Avios if you don't have Qatar miles or points from American Express, Citi, Bilt, or Capital One that transfer directly to Qatar.

In addition to the 30-day rule across all Avios brands, Qatar has a particularly annoying new rule you should know about.

Travelers looking to book award tickets for someone else will need to add them to a “Family & Friends” group or a separate “My List” of approved travelers first.

That might sound simple enough, but there's a catch: Those travelers need a Privilege Club account that's at least 30 days old and must have earned Avios through flying Qatar Airways, one of its partners, or spending on a Qatar co-branded credit card.

That's a significant hurdle for the many U.S.-based travelers who turn points from banks like Amex, Capital One, Citi, Bilt, or Chase into Avios solely to snag Qsuites awards. If you're trying to book seats for a spouse, partner, or travel companion who doesn't already have an established Qatar account with some earning activity, you could run into problems. Case in point: You can't even search for multiple passengers on Qatar's site anymore (let alone book) without having them on one of these lists.

Qatar Airways booking notification

There is a workaround. Because Qatar and British Airways share Avios, you can still often book the same Qatar-operated flights through British Airways Executive Club at comparable rates. But British Airways doesn't always have access to the same award inventory, and booking beyond Doha can be much more challenging.

It's hard not to view this as a soft paywall of sorts – a move that favors Qatar's most loyal flyers over the growing crowd of travelers using transferable points to access premium cabins. I suppose that's fair (even if it is a letdown for most of us) … and there could be a big upside to it.

In theory, fewer people competing for award seats could mean better availability for those willing to jump through the extra hoops. Maybe crediting an American Airlines flight to Qatar and earning a few Avios will be worth it to unlock the world's best business class.

Whether that actually translates into more award space remains to be seen.

If there's one big takeaway from all this, it's to create a Qatar Privilege Club account for your family and friends now! If booking Qsuites is on your to-do list (and it certainly should be), it's best to get the clock ticking.

Bottom Line

Everyone wants to fly Qsuites, and that's why booking them is so tough. But if you know where to look, you can fly the best business class in the sky this year.
