One of the newer low-cost carriers flying to Europe – Iceland's PLAY Airlines – is running a massive sale this week that could get you to Iceland or beyond this winter and spring for some of the cheapest fares we've ever seen … like under $250 total.

PLAY Airlines, which launched nonstop flights from the U.S. to Iceland last year, has U.S. gateways in Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), New York-Stewart (SWF), and Washington, D.C.-Dulles (IAD). Starting today, travelers can buy fares to Europe for trips through April 2024 as low as $79 one-way if they book a roundtrip fare.

But act fast! This deal expires Friday, Dec. 8 at midnight ET.

Wondering what it's like to fly an airline that cheap? I was onboard the very first PLAY flight from the U.S. to Iceland last year and wrote all about its surprises (good and bad) – read my full review of PLAY Airlines. What you'll find is some pretty good legroom (on some of its planes) but an otherwise extremely barebones experience. You'll have to pay for water, for example.

What that means, however, is that PLAY can offer crazy cheap fares like this.

BOS-KEF PLAY Airlines Sale

This roundtrip fare to Iceland via Google Flights is for PLAY's cheapest fares, which don't include anything except a personal item. To find the best PLAY fares, you should use Google Flights to find the cheapest fares, but then click the link that takes you to PLAY's website.

How to Book this PLAY Sale

Use Google Flights to find the best rate, and then click the link to book directly with PLAY. On PLAY's site, you can quickly get a full understanding of what you're paying for.

As you can see, the one-way fare on this roundtrip ticket comes out less than $80! That's pretty amazing … but you won't get much with that fare.

PLAY fare structure

As you can see, the return fares are only slightly more expensive. But combined, these two fares come to a staggeringly cheap roundtrip flight to Europe.

Roundtrip fare BOS-KEF

In total, these two fares come out to $212 roundtrip for a nonstop flight to Iceland. But let's be real: Nobody's flying to Europe without at least a carry-on bag. Let's factor those in.

Boston to Reykjavik

At $59 each way, carry-on bag fees aren't cheap on PLAY. But add them in, and the new roundtrip fare is $328, which is still a steal!

Add in the cheapest, $16-each-way seat selection fee and your total comes out to $360 – still a great deal on roundtrip flights.

If you're willing to stomach a connection in Reykjavik (KEF), this sale includes onward flights to cities like Amsterdam (AMS), Dublin (DUB), London (LHR), and Paris (CDG).

Take a look at this search from Baltimore (BWI) for one-stop PLAY flights to Europe this winter. Remember: These fares don't include carry-ons or seat assignments until you put them in on PLAY's website.

PLAY Europe calendar

There's a ton of great value on this PLAY deal even if Iceland isn't your final destination.

But the best value is on nonstop fares to Iceland, where you'll save not only on the base fare but on the carry-ons and seat assignment as well.

If a cheap trip to see the Northern Lights is on the docket for you this winter, this is surely the cheapest journey you'll find from the east coast of the U.S.
