Yesterday, Uber sent an email to their Minneapolis/St. Paul based customers informing them that they now have access to UberX service at Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport (MSP). This is great news for all MSP based travelers as they previously had to use the much higher-priced Uber Black Car option if they wanted to use the service.

UberX pick-ups will not be available for curbside pickup but rather in the prearranged transportation area. There will also be a $6 airport pick-up fee on the UberX service originating from MSP. This isn’t common among airports allowing UberX service, however, it should still offer significant savings vs. the Uber Black Car or a regular taxi . The $6 pick-up fee is likely in response to the opposition this met from Minneapolis taxi companies who have to pay upfront fees in order to pick travelers up at the airport.

Thrifty Tip #1: Be sure to use the Chase Sapphire Preferred card on all Uber trips as you earn 2X points on travel (which includes Uber).

Thrifty Tip #2: Link your SPG & Uber accounts to earn 1 starpoint for every U.S. dollar you spend with Uber. You can even earn bonus starpoints if you use the Uber service during an active SPG stay.

Bottom Line

This is long overdue for MSP travelers and is a great alternative over costly taxi rides. I will always choose Uber over a regular taxi as it is a great opportunity to earn additional points and miles while drastically reducing your transportation costs.
