If you managed to survive the onslaught of fried food and boring, low-scoring football, there was a great message for would-be world travelers in the 2019 Super Bowl.

Every year there are a handful of travel-related ads during the Super Bowl, and last night was no exception. Turkish Airlines dropped some big money for another advertising spot that was more action film trailer than advertisement.

But one ad, in particular, stood out. Google featured its Google Translate feature in a minute-long TV spot. This is the app that allows you to translate in the middle of a conversation, automatically translate photos of signs and instructions, and more. It's a must-have tool for any international trip.

The ad shows off some of its uses before turning to some of the darker parts of humanity: “words that can hurt, and sometimes, divide.”

“But every day,” the ad continues, “the most translated words in the world are ‘How are you?' ‘thank you,' and ‘I love you.'”

Bottom Line

Our mission at Thrifty Traveler is to make the world a smaller place by helping you see more of it for cheap. But you could fly halfway across the world and not see a thing if you don't do something new, talk to the locals, and see the world from their perspective. Kudos to Google for realizing that – and making it possible.
