Starting Jan. 1, 2027, *amex platinum* and *biz platinum* cardholders will need to book at least two nights at a Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) property to get the cards’ up to $300 semiannual hotel credit.

American Express updated both cards’ benefit terms overnight, confirming the change we first reported last week after it appeared on an Amex test site. The updated terms also rename the benefit the “$600 Lodging Credit” and expand it to cover Airbnb Luxe rentals.

That may sound like a small tweak, but for many cardholders, a single night at a luxury hotel was the easiest way to get real value out of the Platinum Card’s annual_fees annual fee (see rates & fees). That’s exactly what Amex just took away.

What’s Changing (and What Isn’t)

Right now, Platinum cardholders get up to $600 a year in hotel credits: $300 from January through June and another $300 from July through December. The credits apply to prepaid stays booked through American Express Travel® at FHR properties or The Hotel Collection, Amex’s lower-priced tier of hotels.

The Hotel Collection has always required a minimum two-night stay, but FHR never did. You could book one night, pay with your Platinum Card, and the full $300 came off the bill.

Here’s what the updated terms say:

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2027, FHR bookings will require a two-night minimum to qualify for the credit
  • The Hotel Collection still requires a two-night stay, as it always has
  • Prepaid Airbnb Luxe bookings now qualify, also with a two-night minimum. You have to book through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App, and your Airbnb account must be linked to your Amex account
  • The credit amount stays at up to $300 per half-year, or $600 a year
  • The $250 Airbnb Experiences credit that surfaced in last week’s leak isn’t part of the updated terms … at least not yet
  • The two-night FHR rule also applies to *biz platinum*, including the new Lodging Credit name and Airbnb Luxe coverage

The FHR perks themselves aren’t changing. You’ll still get daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, a room upgrade when available and guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout on a one-night stay. You just won’t get the $300 statement credit with it.

Why Amex Is Doing This

Amex makes money every time you book through its travel portal. Requiring a second night means more spending for every $300 credit Amex pays out. It also means some cardholders will look at the bigger bill and not use the credit at all.

Chase already requires two nights to trigger The Edit credit on the *chase sapphire reserve*, but FHR’s one-night flexibility was one of the clearest advantages the Platinum Card had over its competitors. It’s a big reason we ranked FHR above The Edit in our head-to-head comparison.

The timing is telling, too. Barely a year ago, Amex’s September 2025 overhaul doubled this credit to $600 and made it a centerpiece of the card’s new, higher annual fee. Now, Amex is making that same credit harder to use, which works like a quiet fee increase in the form of a benefit change.

The Airbnb Luxe addition doesn’t make up for much either. Luxe homes generally start around $1,000 a night, so with the two-night minimum, you’re looking at a stay of more than $2,000 to use a $300 credit.

What You Should Do Now

Use your July-through-December credit on a one-night FHR stay before the end of the year. It’s the last one-night credit you’ll get with the Platinum Card.

Amex’s terms tie the credit to when your prepaid charge is processed, not when you check in, which means you can book and pay for a one-night stay now for travel well into 2027 and still get the $300 back.

Just don’t wait until New Year’s Eve. Amex relies on the hotel’s processing date, and if a Dec. 31 charge is processed as Jan. 1, it counts toward the next benefit period instead. That period comes with the new two-night rule. Book in November or early December to be safe.

Make sure your plans are firm, too. Amex can reverse the credit if a booking is canceled, refunded or even modified, so changing your dates later could cost you the $300.

From 2027 on, look at The Hotel Collection first. Its properties are generally cheaper, so two nights there may cost less out of pocket than two nights at an FHR hotel. You give up the free breakfast and property credit, but the savings can be worth it.

If the one-night FHR credit was a big part of why you keep the Platinum Card, rerun the math before your next annual fee posts. Our free Credit Card Benefit Tracker tool can show you which credits you’re actually using.

Bottom Line

The Platinum Card’s hotel credit is still worth $600 on paper. But by requiring two nights at FHR properties starting Jan. 1, 2027, Amex has eliminated the easiest way to use it, along with one of the card’s best advantages over Chase.

If you have an unused credit this year, book your last one-night FHR stay well before Dec. 31.
