Capital One has raised the bar for airport lounges, building out a network of them that are free for travelers with the *venture x* – plus, two restaurant-like spaces in New York City-LaGuardia (LGA) and Washington, D.C.-Reagan (DCA). But one of those bona fide lounges is more or less shutting down this summer and into the fall.

The bank confirmed this week that its Washington, D.C.-Dulles (IAD) lounge will “transition to a limited-service model” beginning Thursday, July 9, closing all seating areas and the bar to make way for construction. But the lounge isn't expanding: A Capital One spokesperson said they're making “structural enhancements” to  “improve temperature consistency and maintain a safe, comfortable guest environment year-round.”

The result? It won't be a lounge so much as a grab-and-go food stop with some limited seating outside of the space itself. The bank anticipates the lounge will reopen sometime in the early fall … but lounge construction projects are notoriously problematic, which Capital One knows better than anyone after the two-plus-year delay to open this space in the first place.

“These necessary infrastructure updates will support the long-term guest experience and ensure we continue to deliver the premium Capital One Lounge experience customers expect,” a spokesperson said.

It's unclear exactly what needs fixing inside, though the timing and mention of improving “temperature consistency” suggest the space struggles to stay cool during D.C.'s brutal summer heat.

The 8,500-square-foot Dulles Lounge opened less than three years ago in the early fall of 2023, a full two years after the first location in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW). The bank has since added locations in Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), and New York City (JFK). Something in Charlotte (CLT) is in the works.

While Capital One has struggled to keep pace with the likes of American Express and Chase in building out a network of lounges, these spaces put the rest to shame if you ask us. The decor is great, the food is second-to-none, and the vibes are high.

And while all lounges have grown popular to a fault, Capital One does a much better job than its competitors at controlling capacity to ensure guests have a better experience once they get in the door. A feature to join the waitlist via Capital One's app has helped, too.

But this is just another painful hit for Venture X cardholders on the lounge access front.

Earlier this year, Capital One cut free guest access for Venture X cardholders and even authorized users in a bid to combat overcrowding.

Bottom Line

Don't call it a full-on closure, but Capital One's lounge in Washington, D.C.-Dulles is more or less closing down next month through the end of summer and into early fall to make way for construction. Don't expect much more than a snack and sandwich from the bank's trusty grab-and-go stations and maybe a spot to sit, if you're lucky.
