Say what you will about flying American Airlines, but its AAdvantage loyalty program is arguably the best in the business – chock-full of sweet spot after spot … if you know where to look. And we do.
We've been finding some amazing AAdvantage miles deals in the last year or so – just ask our Thrifty Traveler Premium members, who get alerts every time we find a cheap AAdvantage mileage deal to fly somewhere fun for a fraction of the miles it costs with virtually every other program. While you might still see sky-high rates for some flights, stellar deals are still out there.
That includes some deeply discounted flights on American itself but especially amazing flights on partners including Aer Lingus, japan Airlines, Qantas, and Cathay Pacific. We're talking roundtrip flights to Europe (from nearly anywhere in the U.S.) for 45,000 AAdvantage miles or less, one-way business class flights to Japan for 60,000 miles, as little as 10,000 miles roundtrip to Mexico or the Caribbean, and many, many more!
Take a look at just how good the deals redeeming AA miles can get.

Japan Airlines Business Class from 60K Miles Each Way
Here's a not-so-hot take: Using your American Airlines miles to book Japan Airlines business class to Tokyo for just 60,000 miles each way is one of the best (if not the best) redemptions on earth.
Here's your proof.
Known for its second-to-none service, cozy seats, and thorough route network throughout the United States and Canada, Japan Airlines (JAL) is a nearly perfect ride across the Pacific, especially at that price. That's why we're constantly searching for JAL award availability … and we're constantly finding it, like this gem.
Hawaiian First Class for 64K Miles Each Way
Using AAdvantage miles to book flights on partner airlines is often the best way to use them, period. And one of our favorite redemptions is flying nonstop flights to Hawaii … in Hawaiian Airlines' fancy new first class seats..
These fancy Hawaiian Airlines First Class suites are easily the best way to fly to Hawaii. Just 64,000 AA miles each way is all you'll need to make these suites yours for the long-haul across the Pacific Ocean.
AA Biz Class to London from 65K Miles Each Way
For a trip to London-Heathrow (LHR), American AAdvantage miles are some of the best in the business.
This flight deal to London-Heathrow (LHR) from cities all over the U.S. is the perfect example of the kinds of deals we find several times a year. American runs a deep network of nonstop flights to Europe – many of which open up to sale pricing a few times a year … including prized summer availability!
London is the most frequent example, but we've routinely seen AA slash prices to Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and more throughout the year – often offering rates of 65,000 AA miles each way … and sometimes even less!
Economy to Europe from 45K Points (or Less) RT
The lie-flat seats may get all the love because the bang-for-your-AAdvantage mile is just so high. But all you need is 45,000 AA miles, and you've got roundtrip flights to Europe.
That's right: Roundtrip flights to Europe for half the cost of some of its competitors. This flight from Chicago to Dublin (DUB) is the perfect example of the deeply discounted flights we find on American's partner carriers, such as Aer Lingus. But best of all, this deal even works for flights from smaller airports like Fargo (FAR), too. Adding a connection on American Airlines, with a quick pitstop in Chicago, only increases the taxes and fees by a few bucks.
And the deals can get even better when flying American Airlines to Europe. It's not uncommon to see AA's own flights pricing out at just 42,000 miles roundtrip (or less) from the U.S. to airports across Europe.
And keep in mind: American AAdvantage mile fares are totally refundable – yes, even in economy.
AA Biz Class to New Zealand for 83K Miles Each Way
For the long, long-haul down to New Zealand, you'll want to stretch out in American's comfiest seats. But between $5,000-plus fares and hard-to-find award space to use your miles on a lie-flat seat, that can be tough to pull off.
This nonstop route from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Auckland (AKL) fits the bill. At just 83,000 miles each way for a lie-flat seat, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better way to get there than this.
It was all part of this Thrifty Traveler Premium award alert we sent our members a few months back. Best of all, these flights were on American's brand new Flagship Business Class on the 787 Dreamliner, equipped with closing doors and some of the most modern amenities in the sky.
Caribbean & Mexico for 18K Miles (or Less) RT
If there's one sure bet with even a small stash of AA miles, look to Mexico and the Caribbean.
The airline routinely offers dirt-cheap economy redemptions down to islands throughout the Caribbean – even the expensive ones. For example, just 18,000 AAdvantage miles can get you down to Turks and Caicos (PLS) and back!
The taxes and fees on Caribbean fares can be higher than usual – the example above to Turks & Caicos was more than $120 per ticket. But with how few miles you're forking over, it's still a tremendous deal.
And then there's this: A few times per year, AA slashes prices to select destinations … including Mexico and the Caribbean. Just look at all of the destinations that you could fly to for only 10,000 miles roundtrip with this recent deal.
These are all Main Cabin fares that include seat selection and free changes and cancellations. If you can't make the trip work – or you find a better deal later on (good luck with that) – all you have to do is cancel and get all your miles redeposited and all your taxes and fees refunded!
Cathay Pacific Biz Class to SE Asia from 70K Miles Each Way
With top-notch service and some awesome lounges in Hong Kong (HKG), you're going to want to fly Cathay business class!
Especially at these rates.
That's right: Just 70,000 American miles to fly nonstop to Hong Kong (HKG) – and even connecting onward to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – is a steal for your American Airlines miles. And as you can see below, it's a much better deal than booking with Cathay Pacific miles directly.
These alerts always give you the best ways to book … and, in this case (and many others), that's using American Airlines miles.
So, how do we find these deals? And, most importantly, how do we let you know about them?
- First, our team of flight deal analysts and experts search from more than 200 U.S. and Canadian airports for the best Delta SkyMiles deals around the clock.
- Second, when we find something good, we vet the deal – making sure that it's bookable, that there's no “catch” or “trap,” and that it's a fare that we would book ourselves.
- Third, we put together a flight deal alert and send it to your inbox – and for the rarest deals, you'll get a “Unicorn Alert” text message, too! You can also log in to your account to see the deal info and any other deals we've sent.
- Fourth: You book the deal! This is what you've been hoarding SkyMiles for – a sizzling deal worth your hard-earned miles.
And that's it! We're not travel agents and we don't work with the airlines. We just find the deals Delta doesn't want you to know about and alert you to them so you can get maximum value out of your stash of miles.
Plus, we offer a 100-day money-back guarantee for first-time subscribers. If you're not loving the deals you get, you can cancel for a full refund – no questions asked!
Bottom Line
These deals are just the tip of the iceberg – we've found far more deeply discounted American flights in recent months. And we're on the hunt for even more each and every day.
