American Airlines will debut several new routes to Europe next summer, including launching two entirely new destinations in Porto (OPO) and Vienna (VIE), resuming flights to Reykjavik (KEF), and adding another way to get to Barcelona (BCN) with yet another route from Charlotte (CLT).
On the heels of United's splashy new route announcements earlier this week to places like Slovenia and Luxembourg, American pushed the bounds of its own route map this week.
Brand New: Porto & Vienna
The routes:
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Porto (OPO): Starting March 28 on an Airbus A321XLR
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Vienna (VIE): Starting May 6 on an Airbus A321XLR
Much like United, American Airlines is using its newest narrowbody jet – an Airbus A321-XLR capable of making long-haul trips across the Atlantic – to target new destinations in Europe.
American announced it was already planning to serve Porto (OPO) earlier this year, but now it's confirmed that AA will fly the route from its Northeast hub of Philadelphia (PHL). The northern Portuguese city joins AA's service to Lisbon (LIS) from Philadelphia.
The Vienna (VIE) route, on the other hand, was a surprise … but it makes sense given AA's recent strategy in Europe. Over the past two years, AA has launched nonstop flights to Prague (PRG) and Budapest (BUD), so nearby Vienna further enhances AA's flights deeper into Europe.
According to American, the Vienna route will continue on through January 2028, folding in the popular Christmas market season in the region.
Both flights will be on American's new A321-XLRs with lie-flat suites at the front of the plane.
The Return: Reykjavik
The route:
- Philadelphia (PHL) to Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF): Starting May 27 on an Airbus A321neo
American previously served Iceland's Keflavik airport (KEF) from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in 2018 and 2019, but that flight went away in 2020. American hasn't flown to Iceland since.
Now, American service to Iceland returns – but this time, from Philadelphia on a regular Airbus A321neo – much the same as your typical domestic flight. This plane will not feature any lie-flat business seats, which is common for the short Iceland flights.
It's another win for American's increasingly important Philadelphia (PHL) hub for transatlantic service.
More & Better: Barcelona, Nice, Amsterdam & More
The routes:
- Charlotte (CLT) to Barcelona (BCN): Starting May 27 on a Boeing 777-200ER
- New York City (JFK) to Amsterdam (AMS): Starting March 28 Airbus A321-XLR
- New York City (JFK) to Nice, France (NCE): Starting May 6 on an Airbus A321-XLR
- New York City (JFK) to London-Heathrow (LHR): Fourth daily flight starts March 28 Boeing 787-9 with Flagship Suites
- Charlotte (CLT) to Paris (CDG) and Miami (MIA) to Milan (MXP): Both extending to start early on March 4.
When the new Charlotte (CLT) to Barcelona (BCN) route begins, it will make American the largest flyer to the Spanish city, flying there from six different U.S. cities including Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), New York City (JFK), Miami (MIA), Chicago-O'Hare (ORD), and Philadelphia (PHL).
Joining the Barcelona route are new flights from New York to Amsterdam (AMS) and Nice (NCE), too. The Amsterdam flight joins American's existing service from Dallas and Philadelphia.
Also getting some love is AA's New York to London route, which will receive a fourth daily flight starting March 28 on one of American's new 787-9s with Flagship Suites onboard.
Finally, the Charlotte-to-Paris and Miami-to-Milan routes will begin early to snag some spring break traffic, both taking off next year starting March 4.
