Delta is Testing Facial Recognition Technology for Bag Drop at MSP

Delta announced today, they are introducing four self-service bag drop machines at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) this summer, a $600k investment that allows customers to quickly check their own bags. One machine will be equipped to test facial recognition technology to match customers with their passport photos through identification verification. This new technology is the first to be introduced in the United States.

The new investment is expected to save customers time and free up Delta employees for other customer service tasks. According to Delta, studies have found that self-service bag drops have the potential to process twice as many customers per hour. This new technology follows Delta's recent tech advances including RFID technology to track your bags, which have been popular amongst consumers.

Bottom Line

While self-service bag drop isn't the most exciting development, it should speed up the check in process. It's great to see Delta leading the charge with new investments in time saving technology. I don't usually have checked bags, but I'll have to try this fancy new technology when they introduce it this summer.
