The Cape Town EDITION – Marriott's first EDITION-branded property on the African continent – just started taking reservations for stays beginning Nov. 24, 2026.
This is a big deal for points and miles aficionados, and not just because of the “first in Africa” bragging rights. EDITION hotels are Marriott's ultra-luxury, design-forward brand, and this one is landing in one of the most scenic waterfront locations on the globe.
The hotel sits right on the V&A Waterfront, steps from the ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years behind bars. Table Mountain views come standard from many rooms, and the mountain itself is about a 30-minute drive away. The property has 142 rooms and 27 suites, a rooftop pool, a spa, a fitness center, and multiple dining and drinking spots, including a Punch Room and a rooftop bar.
Award availability is wide open right now from late November through next June, including South Africa's peak-summer season (December through February). You'll find the cheapest nights – as few as 108,000 points per night – next spring and summer. That's fall and winter in the Southern Hemisphere, which is a genuinely great time to visit.
That's a pretty steep number of points anyway you slice it. But cash rates are averaging $1,000-plus a night, so even at the top end, you're getting close to 1 cent per point in value – which is pretty spectacular for a Marriott redemption.

Meanwhile, pricier nights from 131,000 to 146,000 points are widely available from November through March. Oddly, the hotel is completely unavailable for three weeks over Christmas and New Year's – for both cash stays and points redemptions.
If you're carrying the *bonvoy brilliant*, its 85,000-point annual free night award (which you can top off with up to 25,000 more points) could get you into one of the cheaper nights for next to nothing. One catch for status holders: Platinum elites (a perk of carrying the Bonvoy Brilliant Card) don't get complimentary breakfast at EDITION properties, though you're still in line for upgrades, early check-in and late check-out.
One caveat worth flagging: New hotel openings are notoriously prone to delays. If you're booking those November or December dates, there's a real chance the hotel pushes your reservation back – it happens more often than not with brand-new properties. If your travel dates are flexible, I'd wait until early 2027 to book, once the hotel's had time to actually open its doors and work out the kinks.
Bottom Line
Yes, 108,000-plus points is a lot to hand over for a night in Cape Town, especially when the U.S. dollar stretches further there than almost anywhere else in the luxury travel world, and there are other excellent five-star hotels nearby for less.
But the Cape Town EDITION looks like it's shaping up to be the top hotel in town when it opens – and this is the first real shot to book it.
