American Airlines in-flight Wi-Fi is about to get a big upgrade … on some of its planes.

The carrier announced Tuesday that it will install SpaceX’s Starlink Wi-Fi on more than 500 narrowbody aircraft beginning in early 2027, marking a major upgrade for flyers after years of slow, spotty onboard internet. The rollout will include incoming Airbus A321neo and A321XLR jets, among other narrowbody Airbus aircraft.

Still, there’s an important catch: Not every American Airlines plane will get Starlink. Not even close.

The Starlink partnership only covers Airbus narrowbody aircraft – not the airline’s large fleet of Boeing 737s nor any of its long-haul jets flying abroad: Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliners. That’s notable because those widebody jets include American’s newest premium-heavy cabins with Flagship Suites business class seats and upgraded interiors.

Still, this is a big deal because Starlink has quickly become the gold standard for in-flight internet. Using thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites, Starlink can deliver dramatically faster speeds and more reliable connections than older satellite systems most airlines still use today. With Starlink, flyers can stream videos, work seamlessly, and even game online without the usual frustrations of airplane Wi-Fi.

“Starlink’s high speed and low latency make the Wi-Fi more reliable, which matters when customers are trying to load pages, join real-time collaboration tools or stay connected consistently throughout a flight. We are excited to bring an at-home level of Wi-Fi experience to our narrowbody fleet, enabling our customers to work, game, stream and scroll endlessly,” American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a statement announcing the partnership.

American’s latest move comes after the airline began rolling out out free Wi-Fi earlier this year for AAdvantage members. That complimentary service relies largely on older connectivity providers with slower speeds and inconsistent performance. Starlink should help fix that.

American is far from the first airline to jump on board the Starlink bandwagon.

United was the first major U.S. airline to announce Starlink installations, followed by Alaska Airlines and Southwest. Meanwhile, Delta recently partnered with Amazon's Leo satellite network for its next-generation of complimentary onboard internet – though that rollout is still years away.

The Starlink upgrade is especially important for American because the airline still doesn’t offer seatback entertainment screens on its domestic fleet. Instead, passengers are expected to stream entertainment to their own devices, and browsing the internet has often been frustrating with the airline’s slower speeds.

The move also fits into American’s broader push to become a more “premium” airline. Over the last year, the carrier has focused heavily on upgrading its lounges, adding more premium seats, and improving the overall customer experience to better compete with Delta and United.

“As a premium global airline, we are continuously seeking out world-class partners like Starlink to deliver what our customers need and want,” added Garboden. “The addition of Starlink solidifies American as a leading airline in keeping passengers connected in flight.”

Bringing Starlink onboard – particularly alongside the airline’s rollout of free Wi-Fi earlier this year – is one of the clearest signs yet that American is finally taking in-flight connectivity seriously, and it’s another sign that the airline industry’s internet arms race is heating up.

Bottom Line

American Airlines is adding fast, free Starlink Wi-Fi to more than 500 planes, beginning early next year.

It’ll take years before Starlink reaches a meaningful chunk of American’s fleet, and many planes still won’t get the upgrade at all. But for travelers tired of unreliable airplane internet – especially on an airline that relies so heavily on personal-device streaming – this is a major step in the right direction.
