On Wednesday, Marriott and Uber announced a new partnership allowing Marriott Bonvoy members to earn bonus points for purchases with Uber. And that includes both rides and orders on their food delivery platform, Uber Eats.

You'll earn 3x points on some (but not all) Uber rides and 2x points per dollar on most Uber Eats orders – but up to 6x points. But as a bonus, if you link your Uber and Marriott Bonvoy accounts by May 31 and complete a qualifying Uber Eats or Uber ride, you'll earn 2,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points.

To get started, you must have both an active Uber and Marriott Bonvoy account. You can link them by following this link. Once you do, you'll start to earn bonus Marriott Bonvoy points on all eligible transactions.

How You Can Earn Bonus Marriott Bonvoy Points with Uber

With the new Marriott and Uber partnership, you can earn up to 6x Mariott Bonvoy points per dollar you spend with Uber. However, only certain rides and orders will qualify.

  • You will earn 6x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on Uber Eats deliveries to Marriott hotels. However, you must have a minimum order of $25 to qualify for the bonus points.
  • You'll earn 2x Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on other deliveries and takeout orders through Uber Eats. Again, you'll need to have a minimum order of $25 to qualify.
  • Finally, you'll earn 3x Marriott Bonvoy points on rides with Uber XL, Uber Comfort, Uber SUV, and Uber Black rides. Unfortunately, UberX rides will not qualify to earn bonus Marriott Bonvoy points.

How to Link Your Marriott Bonvoy & Uber Accounts

You'll need an active account with both Uber and Marriott Bonvoy to get started. Once you've got that covered, just follow this link to start the account linking process.

One note: There were some initial issues on the Marriott site with linking accounts. If you run into problems, try again later.

Otherwise, you can simply open your Uber app, and open “Settings.” When you scroll down, you'll see Marriott Bonvoy listed under the “Rewards” category.

Simply click on that and it will prompt you to link your account by signing into your Marriott Bonvoy account. And once you are done, you'll be ready to earn bonus Marriott Bonvoy points on your qualifying purchases with both Uber and Uber Eats. And critically, these points will be in addition to the rewards points you earn with Uber.

Our Analysis

If you are already using Uber and have a Marriott Bonvoy account, this is a no-brainer. And while you won't earn points on Uber Eats orders under $25 or on the most popular rideshare option – UberX – it's still a great option to potentially earn some free Marriott Bonvoy Points.

Keep in mind that Marriott Bonvoy points will expire if you have no activity in your account for 24 months. So if you have points expiring, making a purchase with Uber Eats over $25, or taking a ride with Uber (excluding UberX, of course) is a great way to reset the clock on your points expiration by creating some activity in your Marriott account.

Uber is taking a page out of Lyft's book with this new promotion, as Lyft currently has partnerships with both Delta Air Lines and Hilton Hotels. Both partnerships make it possible to earn bonus points by riding with Lyft. You can even earn Delta miles and Hilton Honors points on the same ride!

Bottom Line

Starting today, you can link your Marriott Bonvoy and Uber accounts to earn bonus Marriott points on qualifying purchases with Uber. You'll need an active account with both Uber and Marriott to take advantage of this new partnership. And while Uber Eats orders under $25 and rides with UberX will not qualify, this is still an easy way to earn bonus Marriott points for spending you may already be doing.

Even more importantly, it's also a great way to reset the clock on your expiring Marriott Bonvoy points.
