American Airlines is currently running a massive award sale, offering over 1 million economy award seats for as low as just 5,000 AAdvantage miles each way for trips this August and September. This includes domestic flights within U.S. (but not Hawaii or Alaska), as well as routes to Mexico, the Caribbean, and even select European destinations like London and Rome.
With so many seats and routes up for grabs, just about anyone with a stash of AA miles – even a small one – should be able to pull off a trip later this summer. But the window to book at these prices is closing: This promotion ends on Wednesday, May 28!
From Fargo to Aruba, Boise to Miami, and Sacramento to London, there's no shortage of options for taking advantage of this sale. Here's a quick glance at what you can book:
- Domestic flights clock in as low as 5,000 miles each way
- Same goes for both Mexico and the Caribbean: Just 5,000 miles!
- One-way flights to Europe or home start as low as 15,000 miles each way!
To begin your search, simply head to aa.com and enter your desired departure and arrival cities, along with your travel dates. Be sure to check the box for “Redeem miles” or else you'll only see cash fares.
Thrifty Tip: It's often easier to start by searching for one-ways in each direction and then pair them together into a roundtrip.
After your initial search results come through, you can sort them by departure and arrival time, trip duration, and price. If your travel dates are flexible and you're looking for even more options, you can pull up a full month calendar view by selecting “calendar” in the upper right corner.
And unlike most airline promos, this one is pretty much wide open, no matter where you're heading. Just take a look at all the options to fly from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Aruba (AUA) in August for just 5,000 miles one way.
The same goes for flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Montego Bay (MBJ) in Jamaica. That's nearly three full weeks worth of availability at the lowest 5,000-mile price point in September.
Admittedly, traveling to the Caribbean in peak Hurricane season is no sure bet. But considering these tickets book into AA's “Main Cabin” and are fully refundable, it could be well worth the gamble at these prices … because it's not a gamble at all! Lock in a cheap trip now, then cancel and get those miles back for free if need be.
Another (safer) option would be to set your sights across the pond. Just look at all this award space from Fargo (FAR) to London-Heathrow (LHR).
While it's not quite as cheap as those 5,000-mile awards to the Caribbean, paying just 15,000 miles and $5.60 in taxes and fees for a one-way ticket from a small-regional airport like Fargo all the way to London is pretty tough to beat. Especially when the calendar is so wide-open for a trip in September.
Just be warned, some of these lowest priced options – whether you're heading from Fargo to London or Los Angeles to Jamaica – may include less-than-ideal connections. It's not uncommon to find itineraries like this, with total travel times pushing 24 hours and long overnight layovers in either direction.
But other times, you'll find the lowest-priced option is also the most efficient. Like this eight-hour flight from Boise (BOI) to Miami (MIA). With just one quick connection at Chicago-O'Hare (ORD), this is about as fast as you can get to Miami … aside from a nonstop.
No matter where you're headed this summer, this is a fantastic opportunity to get there for less.
