Turn 20,000 SPG Points into 30,000 AAdvantage Miles!

AA Credit Card Bonus

Quite often Mr. TT and I field questions from readers about our favorite travel credit cards. It’s no secret that we are both big fans of the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) credit card, and it’s one of our top card recommendations. Not only is the SPG program hands down the best in the industry from an earning & value standpoint, Starpoints are among the most valuable points & miles currency for the flexibility that they offer. You can use Starpoints to book free nights at thousands of Starwood hotel properties around the world, or you can also transfer them at a 1:1 ratio to over 30 airlines and the best part is you can earn an additional 5,000 airline miles for every 20,000 SPG points transferred. This includes airlines like American, Delta, United, Emirates, and Etihad Airlines just to name a few.

Consistent with what they have done over the past few years, American Airlines is offering an additional 20% transfer bonus on Starpoints transfers into the American AAdvantage program by September 14th, 2016. For example, if you have 20,000 Starpoints that you transfer into the American Airlines AAdvantage program, Starwood will, as usual, automatically add an additional 5,000 points to the transfer (25,000 miles total). As a part of this promotion, American Airlines will add an additional 20% onto your 25,000 points for a total transfer value of 30,000 AAdvantage miles! This is an incredible value, and in our opinion a great use of Starpoints.

Thrifty Tip #1: Thinking about making this transfer? Allow yourself at least 5 business days from the end of the promotion as transfers from the SPG program generally take 3-4 business days to post into the airline of your choosing.

Bottom Line

With the pending acquisition of Starwood Hotels by Marriott, we can all but assume that the SPG program will be gutted in some form or fashion by the end of 2017 or in early 2018. This promotion offers a great way for SPG members to convert their points into another program at a very strong value. Even with the recent AAdvantage revenue based devaluation, there are still plenty of great redemption opportunities. Don’t wait, transfer your Starpoints into the AAdvantage program today!
