Talking Points With Thrifty Traveler: February 16th
Last week, we introduced a new weekly segment in which we will be answering 3-4 reader questions. The questions can be anything from credit card points & miles, travel recommendations, flight questions, or anything you want us to answer. Have a question for us? Email me [email protected] to be featured in this new weekly segment.
I rented a car using Chase Ultimate Rewards Points. Will I still receive the primary rental car insurance? – John T.
One of our favorite benefits of the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit cards is the primary rental car insurance they both offer. When you rent a vehicle and pay with either credit card mentioned above, you will be able to decline the additional insurance offered by rental car companies. If you pay for your rental using Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you will still receive the primary insurance coverage. This insurance doesn’t cover any liability however. Only damage to the vehicle.
Do you have to use the Hyatt Free Night Before It Expires Or Book A Room With It Before It Expires? – Alec W.
One of our favorite benefits of the Hyatt Credit Card is the free anniversary night it provides. This is a great way to save money while staying at great Hyatt properties. The free night will even count towards Hyatt elite status. The only downside of the free Hyatt night certificate is the expiration date. It does carry a 1-year expiration, which means you have to use it (not just book the stay) within one year of it being issued.
What Is A Fifth Freedom Flight? – Allison A.
- Emirates Airlines flies a fifth freedom route between New York City (JFK) and Milan, Italy (MXP) on their Airbus A380 aircraft. This route has a full bar and shower on board. The best way to book Emirates flights with points is using Alaska Airlines miles.
- Another example of a fifth freedom route is the Singapore Airlines route from New York City (JFK) and Frankfurt, Germany (FRA). This also flies the Airbus A380 and the Singapore suite is considered one of the best first class products in the sky. You can transfer all four of the major transferable points currencies to Singapore KrisFlyer miles to book flights (SPG, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou & American Express Membership Rewards).
Do You Have Any Tips For Exchanging Currency In Foreign Countries? – Lisa C.
The number one thing we recommend when it comes to currency exchange is opening the Charles Schwab High Yield Investor Checking Account. There are no ATM withdrawal fees anywhere in the world. Always avoid the currency exchange counter at the airport. They exist for one reason only, to make money off you. They profit from the poor exchange, which is why they are everywhere. Always take money out of an ATM with your debit card for the best exchange rate. There is no cost to have this account, and I have had this product for years. It is a great way to save money internationally.
