Southwest Flights to Hawaii Possible in 2018

Southwest Thrifty Traveler

Southwest flights to Hawaii look to launch from the west coast as early as next year. Southwest CEO Gary Kelly, stated at the annual shareholders meeting this week, that flights to Hawaii are a high priority for a carrier.

According to the Arizona Republic, Kelly stated, “We’re deciding what our plans are for 2018 and Hawaii is important to us”. According to Kelly, Southwest must take several steps to prepare for the launch of Hawaii service, including FAA certification for flights over the Pacific and flight crew training.

Southwest plans to utilize the new Boeing 737 Max for the possible routes to Hawaii. The 737 max is hot off the production line as the first delivery just occurred today to Malaysian based budget carrier Malindo Air. Southwest’s first 737 Max delivery (of 14) arrives in October, and features better fuel efficiency and extended range compared to older 737 models.

Bottom Line

More competition for routes to Hawaii is always a good thing and should drive down prices long term. Mrs. TT and I have the Southwest Companion Pass which makes a flight to Hawaii incredibly appealing, especially flying a new bird such as the 737 Max. We’re huge fans of Southwest here at Thrifty Traveler and can’t for more news on the new possible routes. Stay tuned!
