The new Chase Freedom Flex and longtime favorite Chase Freedom Unlimited are two of the best no-annual-fee credit cards on the market – especially if you pair them with a Chase Sapphire Card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. Now Chase is giving you an even better reason to use a Freedom Card when filling up with gas.

Through Feb. 28, 2021, you can earn 5% cashback (or 5x points, if you also hold a Sapphire card) on purchases at gas stations. That new bonus category only works on up to $150 of spend at gas stations through the end of the month, which works out to an extra $7.50 back – or 750 Ultimate Rewards points. That’s not earth-shattering by any means, but why not get something extra when you pay at the pump?

To get this new gas station bonus, you first have to register your Freedom card directly with Chase. Registration is open through Feb. 28, 2021. Doctor of Credit first reported this new bonus category.

The Basics of Chase Freedom Cards

Earning 5% cashback at gas stations this month just sweetens the deal for all the other Chase Freedom bonus categories.

For example, the Chase Freedom Flex currently earns 5% back at wholesale clubs like Costco & Sam’s Club; internet, cable, & phone services; and select streaming services thanks to its rotating quarterly bonus categories. It also earns 5% back on travel booked through the Chase travel portal, 3% back on dining and at drugstores, and 1% back on all other purchase.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited, meanwhile, earns that same 5% bonus on travel, drugstores, and dining. But then it earns a 1.5% cashback bonus on all other spending, making it an attractive option for your expenses that don’t qualify for bonuses. Critically, neither card has an annual fee!

But where Freedom cards really shine is putting them in tandem with either a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve. With those cards in your wallet, you can convert the cashback you earn into Chase Ultimate Rewards points: Every cent of cashback gets you 1 point. And that makes a Freedom Card half of a powerful duo to earn more points for your future travels.

Bottom Line

Earning a few bucks of cashback or extra Chase points isn’t the best bonus of the year. But there’s no reason not to activate this new bonus category and use your Chase Freedom card at the pump through the rest of February.

  • The Chase gas station bonus is not working. I tried to activate this bonus but it would not go through. I called up Chase and they had no idea of this bonus.

    • I’d give it a few days and give Chase another call. This bonus is still quite new, and it can take a few days for Chase agents to get the memo.
