New TSA Rules: Take out all Electronics larger than a Phone

On Wednesday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rolled out new security measures for carry-on baggage screening. The new rules will require travelers to place all electronics larger than a cell phone in bins for x-ray screening in standard screening lanes. The new screening procedures don’t apply to passengers enrolled in TSA Pre who are using TSA Pre lanes.

The following airports have already piloted and implemented the new screening procedures:

  • Boise Airport (BOI)
  • Colorado Springs Airport (COS)
  • Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL)
  • Logan International Airport (BOS)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB)
  • Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
  • McCarran International Airport (LAS)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

All other US airports will roll out the new procedures over the coming weeks. Thankfully, having TSA Pre✓ will allow you to avoid the new procedures. If you don’t have TSA Pre✓, there is now more incentive to do so.

Bottom Line

Enhanced procedures are also being implemented at many airports worldwide. I flew from Keflavik International Airport in Iceland last week, and I was required to remove all electronics for screening. There were also additional screening questions from staff at the gate (did I pack my own bag, etc.). If you’re flying in the next few months make sure to give yourself extra time as the new procedures will likely slow down security lines. Do yourself a favor and get TSA Pre✓ and if you’re a frequent traveler, I’d recommend CLEAR as well.

If you travel often overseas, get Global Entry, it gives you access to Precheck lines and quicker customs processing.
