Since the Starwood and Marriott merger closed, we have seen a number of changes to partnerships offered by both the Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest programs. For example, in October of last year, Starwood and Uber ended their partnership, which was one of the better ones we had seen in a long time.

On Monday, SPG/Marriott and Hertz introduced a new partnership which is very positive. This new partnership allows SPG program members to earn Starpoints and get discounted rates for Hertz rentals. Further, SPG/Marriott status members will receive a status match in Hertz’s loyalty program.

Highlights of New Marriott/SPG Hertz Partnership

  • As a part of this new partnership, All SPG members (regardless of status level) will now have access to discounted rates and will earn 200 Starpoints for their Hertz car rentals. In order to be eligible for this, you will need to register and link your accounts.
  • SPG & Marriott Rewards Platinum status members will receive Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star Status. SPG/Marriott members with Platinum Ambassador or Marriott Platinum Premier Elite status will receive Hertz’s top tier President’s Circle status.
  • As you can see below, Hertz’s Five Star status gets you expedited rental and a one class car upgrade subject to availability.
  • Hertz’s President’s Circle status gets you expedited rental, and a confirmed one class upgrade.

Bottom Line

It is nice to see the addition of loyalty program partnerships like this. If you rent cars from Hertz often, this should be a no brainer as it will be an easy way to pick up additional SPG points, which we feel are some of the most valuable points and miles out there. Further, if you have SPG/Marriott Platinum status, you might as well get registered for this.

This has already changed and been bumped one Marriott level in order to have status match. Platinum premier plus is required for Five Star (ambassador for Presidents circle).

Absurdly high bar to cross to earn status for a rental car company. This clearly was cosmetic and partnership was never part of the plan.
