Our Analysis

Historically, the Hilton Honors program has been viewed as subpar to many of the other hotel loyalty programs in the marketplace. However, Hilton has made several positive changes in the last few years which are a step in the right direction. The most noteworthy changes are as follows:

  • Pooling Points (since April 2017): You now have the option of pooling your points with friends and family members (up to 10 people total). This is a great option if you frequently travel with a spouse or significant other. You are allowed to share up to 500,000 points a year, which is a very generous cap.
  • Points & Money: Hilton Honors members can now choose nearly any combination of points and money using a new payment slider that starts at 5,000 Points. With this new perk, Points pricing will be more flexible, giving members the option to use their choice of Points on hotel stays, any time, with no blackout dates.
  • Amazon Shop with Points: You have the ability to use Hilton Honors Points to shop at Amazon.com. The ratio on this is 0.2 cents per Hilton Honors point, which is not favorable and I generally wouldn’t recommend using your Hilton points on Amazon, however, the option is available.

Amex welcome offers are not available to applicants who have earned the bonus on the same credit card products before. If you haven’t yet had these cards, this is a great opportunity to pick them up.

Bottom Line

You can squeeze quite a bit of value out of Hilton properties. In 2016, Mr. TT & I booked rooms at the Hampton Inn Mexico City for only 10k Hilton Honors points a night (currently 20k to book). While not the nicest property in their portfolio, it fit our needs perfectly. Get more information about this card and other travel rewards cards here.
