The Bank of America Alaska Airlines Visa signature card sign-up offer has been increased to 30,000 miles for the personal version of the card! The bonus is usually 25,000 miles so this is a great offer and matches the highest offer in several years. The card also has an annual companion fare from only $121 ($99, plus taxes and fees from $22) after making $1,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. You will also receive a free checked bag and 3 miles for every $1 spent on Alaska Airlines tickets (1 mile for every $1 on all other transactions). There are also no foreign transaction fees, so you can use it anywhere in the world.
Even if you don’t fly Alaska Airlines often, their miles offer incredible value for all of Alaska’s redemption partners. Just this past May, Mr. & Mrs. TT flew first class on the Emirates A380 in First Class (the plane with the shower and bar) from Washington, DC to Barcelona, Spain with a four day stopover in Dubai, UAE using Alaska miles. He outlines how this can be done in a post from March. Even after the recent devaluation, this is still an incredible use of Alaska miles. Below, I’ve laid out some of our favorite uses of Alaska Mileage Plan miles.
Emirates First Class Flights
Even after the Emirates devaluation, we still like this redemption. If you have Starwood Preferred Guest Points (SPG), these can be transferred at a 20% bonus into the Alaska program, making this redemption more attainable. It’s worth it to save up your miles for the 180k Europe or Asia award because you are allowed to a do a stopover in Dubai and then continue on.
Thrifty Tip #1: Want to Visit Dubai, UAE? Emirates allows you to build a stopover in Dubai into any of their award redemptions. This essentially gives you two trips for the price of one!
Cathay Pacific First Class Flights to Asia
Another great way to use your Alaska miles is for First Class flights on Cathay Pacific. However, Cathay flights cannot be booked on the Alaska website so you will need to call to book these awards. If you want to research options before calling, you can do so by using the British Airways Avios redemption tool. Any flights on Cathay that appear here should also be available to book with Alaska miles. You should be able to book first class flights to Asia for 70,000 miles one-way. As with most Alaska awards, you can build in a stopover at no extra charge.
American/Delta/Air France/KLM from to Europe
Choose your favorite airline to get you to Europe. Multiple airlines offer nationwide nonstop flights to Europe. Economy is only 20,000 miles one-way and Business class starts at only 50,000 miles, which is cheaper than almost any other rewards program.
Fiji Airways Business Class to Fiji
Fiji is a bucket list location in the South Pacific. The problem with the island is it’s very hard to reach on points. Luckily Fiji Airways has partnered with Alaska, and offers nonstop flights from LA and Honolulu to Nadi, Fiji. I did a quick search and you can get from Minneapolis to Nadi, Fiji for only 40,000 in economy one-way or 55,000 miles in Business class!
Qantas Flights to Australia
Although availability can be tough to come by, booking flights to Australia in business class can offer great value and can typically be done for around 55,000 miles. You may struggle to find more than 1 seat if traveling with a companion, but if you can find availability, this is a tremendous value.
Flights to Hawaii on Alaska Metal
Alaska has some of the most extensive Hawaiian routing if you are flying out of the continental US with multiple non-stop options into all four of the major airports in the state (HNL, OGG, KOA, LIH). Most of these can be booked for around 20,000 Alaska Miles one-way! Below is a screenshot from the Award Calendar for next February from Seattle to Honolulu. Wide open availability for non-stop flights.
You can also use Alaska Mileage Plan miles to book award travel on all of their partner airlines which are listed below:
One of the best benefits of Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan is that even if you don’t fly Alaska Airlines, you can earn Alaska miles on all 15 of their partners. This includes several domestic airlines, including American and Delta, and many international carriers, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Emirates. All you need to do is include your Mileage Plan number in your reservation.
Alaska Mileage Plan miles are generally considered to be some of the most valuable miles out there for the reasons mentioned above. Being that the airline doesn’t currently belong to any alliance it can pick and choose their partners which in turn offers tremendous value for consumers. With the new increased offer, now time to start collecting Alaska miles!
