The IHG credit card is often overlooked in the world of points and miles, and it most certainly shouldn’t be. It has a solid signup bonus, low annual fee, and it offers a valuable free night every anniversary of card membership. Below, we will show you why the IHG card is one of the best hotel credit cards out there. Get more information about this card and other travel rewards cards here.

Benefits Of The IHG Credit Card

Sign Up Bonus of 60,000 IHG points – After you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months of card membership. You can even earn an additional 5,000 bonus points if you add an authorized user to your account and make a purchase with your card during the first 3 months of card membership.

These points can be used to book incredible IHG properties like the InterContinental Paris le Grand, or the Venetian in Las Vegas. We love InterContinental properties with our favorites being the InterContinental Bora Bora and the InterContinental Moorea (Tahiti).

Annual Free Night – In my opinion, this is the best perk offered from the IHG Credit Card. Each year of card membership, you will be given a free night certificate that is valid at any IHG property worldwide. There are no blackout dates, and as long as a room is available at the hotel, you should be able to redeem the certificate. You can even combine your free anniversary night with IHG points to extend the length of your free stay. To maximize the value of the free night, we always recommend staying at an InterContinental property.

Transfer Partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards – The IHG program is a 1:1 transfer partner of the Chase Ultimate Rewards Program. This means you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points earned on cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Sapphire Reserve to help bolster your IHG points balance and extend your award stays. This isn’t our favorite use of Chase Ultimate Rewards points, but it is most certainly an option.

Category Spending Bonuses – You will earn 5X points per dollar spent at all IHG hotels. You will also earn 2X points per dollar spent at gas stations, grocery stores & restaurants, and 1X point per dollar on everything else.

Personally I don’t put much spending on my IHG card, because I carry the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. This is a 1:1 transfer partner of the IHG program and offers better category spend bonuses and more flexibility with my points.

IHG Platinum Elite Status – You will receive IHG’s Platinum Elite status for as long as you have the card. Platinum Elite status gets you the following perks:

  • 50% points bonus earned on paid stays
  • Complimentary room upgrades (subject to availability)
  • Guaranteed room availability
  • Automatic 10% point rebate on redemptions (up to 100,000 points each year)
  • Points don’t expire
  • Free Premium Internet
  • Welcome amenity
  • Elite rollover nights

Not Impacted By The Chase 5/24 Rule – The IHG Credit Card is not subjected to Chase’s 5/24 rule. This means that you should be eligible for the card, even if you’ve opened more than five new credit accounts in the past 24 months.

Annual Fee – The IHG Credit Card has an annual fee of $49, and it is waived for the first year. However, because of the free anniversary night mentioned above, this is a small price to pay, and the reason I continue to keep this card open. I have had no issues getting more than $49 of value out of the card each year I have had it. The card also does not have foreign transaction fees.

Bottom Line

Get the IHG card and hold onto it. It is one of the best hotel cards offered. Mr. TT and I have had this card for years and will continue to do so as long as the free anniversary night benefit is intact. The 60,000 bonus points and annual free night certificate offer incredible value. Get more information about this card and other travel rewards cards here.
