How to Register For SPG AmEx Boingo Wi-Fi Access

The Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) American Express cards rolled out quite a few new features last week including:

    1. No Foreign Transaction Fees —  Enjoy international travel without foreign transaction fees.
    2. Free Unlimited Boingo Wi-Fi — You’ll get complimentary, unlimited Wi-Fi access when you enroll in the Boingo American Express Preferred Plan.
    3. Free Premium In-Room Internet Access — Usually faster than the basic internet.
    4. Sheraton Club Access — If you have the SPG Business card, you’ll receive free access to Sheraton Clubs when you book paid stays. This is basically free continental breakfast and evening snacks. Nothing fancy but it’s a nice perk.

One of the features I’ve been looking forward to is using the free Unlimited Boingo Wi-Fi. Now don’t get this confused with GoGo in-flight internet as this is Wi-Fi only, and not for use while flying.

Here in Minneapolis, we have very few Boingo hotspots, while New York and Los Angeles have thousands. I’d say it’s definitely more useful in larger US cities or when you are traveling abroad. In Europe it can be very difficult to find a free Wi-Fi connection so the Boingo hotspots will come in very handy.

Thrifty Tip: Both the primary cardmembers and authorized users are eligible to use the Unlimited Boingo service.

Once you find out if you’re eligible all you need to do is create a username and password and you’re set! There is also a phone app to find nearby hotspots. I tested it out briefly and it seems to be pretty slick.

That’s all you need to do! It really does not get much easier than that. Again the real value for me is to use the Boingo service in airports and in Europe and Asia where locked down Wi-Fi is generally the norm. It should come in handy next month when I head to Hong Kong. If you’d like to learn more about the SPG AmEx cards read my review. AmEx is offering 30k points on both cards until 9/14/15 so apply before then!
