Harbor Mobile: How I Pay only $33 for Unlimited Talk and Text

Update 9/23/15: It appears that Harbor Mobile is in the process of switching over it’s primary service from T-Mobile to AT&T. Prior T-Mobile subscribers will be able to keep their service while new service will be offered through AT&T. Check out this post for more info. I will update once the new Harbor Mobile AT&T service goes live.

I pay $33 flat per month (including tax) for T-Mobile cellular service on an iPhone 6 Plus that includes unlimited talk, text, and 2.5GB of monthly data. I bet that is significantly less than you’re currently paying right now isn’t it? Let’s see if a switch to Harbor Mobile is right for you.

Harbor Mobile is a reseller of T-Mobile Business plans, and the secret is they don’t even ask if you have a business! You are simply purchasing a prepaid T-Mobile plan through a 3rd party vendor who handles all the paperwork. I have been using the service for over a year and have nothing but good things to say about Harbor Mobile. The only downside is that you don’t get a subsidized phone like you typically do with many of the other nationwide carriers, but even after purchasing a phone you’ll still save hundreds of dollars a year.

Thrifty Tip #1: There is no contract for Harbor Mobile! You are free to quit whenever you would like. Just send Harbor Mobile an email to cancel; it really is that easy.

Who should sign up for Harbor Mobile:

  • Live in an area with strong T-Mobile coverage (Pink areas below)
  • Can bring your own contract free phone

One of my favorite features about Harbor Mobile is that if you have any issues with your plan, Harbor Mobile is responsible for resolving them. You just contact Harbor Mobile by email and they will contact T-Mobile and resolve the issues within an hour or two. It’s the best of both worlds – you have dependable T-Mobile service and you never have to waste time calling into customer service!

Thrifty Tip #2: T-Mobile now offers free Wi-Fi calling which can be used anywhere you have Wi-Fi, even outside the country. All calls to the United States are free from anywhere when using Wi-Fi calling. I also love Wi-Fi calling because it saves battery life.

Thrifty Tip #3: T-Mobile offers free international data in 120+ countries. It’s typically 3G speeds or less but it works for texting and Google Maps, which is all I really care about. You never have to worry about paying huge fees for data and text while on vacation!

Thrifty Tip #4: Delta offers free in-flight texting to T-Mobile customers. Mrs. TT always appreciates some emoji’s while I’m flying.

Thrifty Tip #5: Streaming Music via Spotify or Pandora does not count towards your 2.5GB monthly data limit!

Quick Comparison Verizon vs. Harbor Mobile:
Monthly Cost (w/tax) 24 month Cost Phone Cost Total Cost
Verizon (2 yr contract) $85 $2,040 $200 $2,240
Harbor Mobile (No contract) $33 $792 $600 $1,392

This is a very basic example with iPhone’s flagship phone (iPhone 6). Over two years you would save $848 by switching to Harbor Mobile and not have to be encumbered by a contract! You could save even more with a less expensive phone. The numbers speak for themselves. I have never seen a cheaper phone plan which includes unlimited talk, text, and 2.5GB of data.

Thrifty Tip #6: Even if you do go over your 2.5GB data limit you are not charged extra.  Your speeds will just be throttled (non-4G) for the remainder of the month.

You can bring almost any unlocked phone to Harbor Mobile. Your phone must not be in contract with another carrier and your phone can’t still be financed.  If you’ve met those requirements you should have no problem transferring it over.

My favorite unlocked phone choices from Amazon:

Motorola Nexus 6 – 32GB ($499)Screen Shot 2015-06-09 at 9.54.48 PM

  • One of Android’s flagship phones
  • Brilliant 6″ screen and dual front-facing stereo speakers make content shine
  • Go longer and charge less with a 3220 mAh battery and turbocharging
  • Get the most out of Android 5.0, Lollipop

I personally use the iPhone 6 Plus on Harbor Mobile’s (T-Mobile) network. The Samsung Galaxy S6 is also another great phone. If you are looking for a cheap phone the Nokia Lumia 530 is less than $50! Almost any phone works as long as it’s out of contract and unlocked!

I have been very pleased with Harbor Mobile’s responsiveness to my questions and service overall. In addition, T-Mobile offers better service through Free Wi-Fi calling, Free international data/text, and Free in-flight texting on Delta flights! No other phone service provider gets even close to offering the same services for the price! With all these cutting edge free services T-Mobile truly is a Thrifty Travelers best friend!

How easy is it to get an invite code? Without it you cannot get service. Thanks.

The Nexus 6 has dropped to $300 via qualitycellz on eBay. With WiFi calling built in, that’s an amazing phone to go with Harbor Mobile(existing connection).
