Mr. TT and I are often asked our opinion on the best travel credit cards in the marketplace. While this question is largely based on your overall travel goals, for ease of use, we always recommend the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard. After spending $3,000 in the first 90 days of card membership, your sign-up bonus of 40,000 bonus miles can be used for up to $400 in travel statement credits. Since you earn a 5% rebate on miles redeemed, you will effectively receive an additional $20 for a redemption worth $400 towards travel ($420 total).

Because you can redeem these miles to offset almost any travel-related charge, it’s one of our favorites for its overall flexibility. Not only can you use the card to book flight deals you find on Thrifty Traveler or Thrifty Traveler Premium, it can be used to book flights on almost any airline, trains, car rentals, hotels, Airbnb or anything else that is classified as travel. Keep in mind, that in order to utilize statement credits with the card, the charge must be for $100 or more. The card also has an $89 annual fee, but it’s waived for the first year.

Thrifty Tip#1: You can book travel expenses immediately on the card and once you earn the sign-up bonus, you can apply the points to your prior travel (within 120 days).

Statement Credits

Let me give you an example of how the statement credits work. You can book a $500 airline ticket on your card after you receive it in the mail. When you later meet the $3,000 spending requirement and earn the 50,000 bonus miles (within the first 90 days of card membership), you simply apply those points to the prior purchase. Barclaycard Arrival miles can be applied to any travel purchase on the card within 120 days. The statement credit offers a lot of flexibility, as you can book almost any airline, train, car rental, or hotel and receive a statement credit as long as the charge is $100 or more as mentioned above.

I used this card to pay for our Airbnb on a recent trip to Rome, Italy and received a $672 statement credit for my purchase (redeemed 64,000 Barclaycard Arrival miles plus a 5% rebate). The card covers so many travel expenses that normally would not be covered by other points and miles programs. Because of this, it has earned a permanent place in my wallet.

Bottom Line

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard is one that every Thrifty Traveler should have in their wallet. We feel this is the perfect credit card to compliment the flight deals you see on this site. Combine the next flight deal you book with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard and start compounding your travel savings!
