Is 2021 here yet?
This year has been a challenge, to say the least – especially for travel. The COVID-19 pandemic has nearly all 2020 travel plans on pause, with no sure sign of when we’ll all be able to set out across the globe again.
Yet we can’t help but look ahead to the future. Planning a trip – scoring a great flight deal, finalizing which cities or countries you’ll hit, researching those can’t-miss restaurants – is one of our favorite parts of travel, period. And we could all use something to look forward to right now.
And despite the uncertainty of when safe and easy travel may resume, it’s a great time to plan that next big trip for 2021 for two big reasons. For one: Airlines are giving travelers some unprecedented flexibility to book flights now as far out as September 2021, then change or cancel for free if necessary.
Oh yeah, and the other part: COVID-19 has forced airlines to offer some astoundingly cheap fares for next year and beyond.
Get ready to daydream: Check out some of the cheapest flight deals for 2021 we’ve found and sent to Thrifty Traveler Premium members lately. Many of these deals are no longer live. But if you want to hop on the next flight deal, try Thrifty Traveler Premium for just $5.99 a month! Oh, and there’s a special treat waiting for you at the end…
Summer 2021 Flights to Europe from $295 RT
Raise your hand if you had a 2020 Europe trip planned. We’re pouring one out (virtually) for you.
But now’s not the time to cry over trips lost. We’ve been finding some exceptionally cheap fares to Europe. And the best part? Flight prices are crazy low for peak summer 2021 – typically the most expensive time to fly to Europe. We mean it when we say it: There’s never been a cheaper time to book a trip to Europe for next summer.
And while Europe isn’t open yet to American travelers, we’re hopeful that will change by summer 2021.
While we’ve found cheap summer fares to Europe hotspots like Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, and Madrid, we’ve found some notably cheap fares to our favorite Eastern European cities that have us checking our eyesight. Those flights typically cost over $1,000 apiece, often with nasty layovers or connections. But we’ve found flights to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland from $487 round-trip.
The best part? When we sent this flight deal alert to Premium members, these fares were bookable in August & September 2021 during peak season!
Want to tackle more than one city? With this deal, you could book these as an open-jaw itinerary, flying into one European city and out of another.
Nonstop flights to Ireland under $300 roundtrip? During St. Paddy’s Day 2021? Yes, we’re serious. These are some of the cheapest fares we’ve seen to Dublin (DUB) and Shannon (SNN). And nonstop flights make the journey even easier!
Thrifty Tip: Not from one of the cities we found the deal from? You could have booked a cheap positioning flight to one of these cities to make the most of this rare deal!
For you nature lovers, Iceland is unbeatable. We recently found nonstop fares to Reykjavík (KEF) through peak summer 2021 for hundreds off the typical price. Summers in Iceland get nearly 24 hours of sunlight, which means extra time for sightseeing before dark!
We’ve found SkyMiles flash sales to Italy, the Netherlands, and other European hotspots. But one of our favorites? A flash sale to all of Spain, including rare availability to Ibiza and Mallorca from just 44,000 SkyMiles roundtrip! Fares to these cities during May 2021 would typically cost 100,000 SkyMiles or more than $1,200.
Booking with Delta miles is fantastic as all tickets booked with SkyMiles right now are fully refundable – you’ll get your miles and taxes and fees back, no questions asked!
Asia & The 2021 Tokyo Olympics
Japan is aiming to restart tourism by spring 2021. And if you’ve always wanted to witness the Olympics, these flight deals we’ve been seeing to Asia are the perfect excuse to finally do it. Let’s start with an insane mistake fare we found to pull it off in style…
Business Class. Lie-flat seats. Peak summer. Olympics availability. Cancelable for a voucher. Need we say more? We instantly alerted our Premium members to this mistake fare to Hong Kong and Seoul – the perfect starting point to hop over to Japan for the Olympics – with savings of over $4,000! It lasted just a few hours.
Looking to get to Japan on points and miles instead? A recent SkyMiles flash sale could have gotten you there on the cheap, starting at just 50,000 miles round-trip for round-trip flights to Tokyo from June through August 2021!
Rare Cheap Fares to Bucket-List Destinations
Stop dreaming of these places and make it happen in 2021. And trust us: airfare does not need to be a barrier.
If you’ve ever tried to find cheap flights to Israel, you know they don’t come around often. We recently discovered rare peak summer fares at half the price ($497 instead of $1,200!) to Tel Aviv (TLV).
Not sure when the country you want to visit will re-open to international travelers? Check out our country-by-country guide for a full breakdown!
If there’s one destination that Premium members go craziest for, it’s Hawaii. But a ticket to these tropical islands doesn’t usually come cheap. Yet we found roundtrip flights to Hawaii as low as $256 – and under $387 nationwide through spring break 2021! Here are just a few examples of the pricing we’ve found:
- Austin (AUS) – $365
- Dallas (DFW) – $325
- Denver (DEN) – $325
- Minneapolis (MSP) – $325
- Phoenix (PHX) – $316
And remember: each deal we send to Premium members can be changed or canceled for a voucher or rebooked for a later date fee-free. That gives you the freedom to lock in a flight to Hawaii at a price that will make you look twice.
South Africa reopened starting in October, but it’s not yet clear when U.S. travelers will be allowed. A 2021 trip it is, then! While flights to Africa often cost more than $1,000, we found fares for $600 through May 2021.
U.S. National Park Hubs Under $200 RT
And some of the domestic fares we’re seeing lately will make your jaw drop. We’ve been finding sub-$100 fares to tons of favorite U.S. destinations like Phoenix, Chicago, Miami, and more. And we’ve been seeing prices drop on hard-to-reach destinations that are typically expensive, like national park gateways.
Take Grand Junction (GJT) for example, a great starting point for Arches and Canyonlands National Parks in Utah. While fares regularly sell for over $400, we found flights through May 2021 there from 30-plus cities under $200!
And the flight deals to national parks don’t stop there. We recently sent Premium members an alert for half-off flights to Grand Canyon Village (FLG), the closest airport to this national icon. You could book your August 2021 hiking trip now for half the cost!
Just because you’ve shelved travel for 2020 doesn’t mean there’s no hope for next year. Many of the cheap flights shown here have evaporated, but the next insane flight deal is just around the corner.
