Ending Soon: Citi Executive 75k American AAdvantage offer (and how to avoid the $450 annual fee!)

The Citi Executive 75k American AAdvantage offer is one of the most lucrative offers in the points game, and the 75k AAdvantage offer expires October 27th. The card offers enough for a one-way first class flight to Europe (50k miles) and more than enough for a first class  round-trip flight domestically (50k miles)! Heck you can even go to Sydney, Australia on the new A380 in first class one-way for 72.5k AAdvantage miles! The current offer requires spending $7500 in the first 90 days, but don’t be intimidated by the spending requirements, I’ll show you what to do. There is also an upfront annual fee of $450, but that doesn’t mean you have to pay it!

Follow my simple steps to quickly meet the spending requirements and avoid the annual fee:

  1. Apply for the Citi Executive Credit Card
  2. Spend $7500 immediately when you receive it through the Simon Mall or Macerich Mall gift card method or however is easiest for you meet the spending requirements (must meet spending requirements before the first statement closes).
  3. Once the first statement closes your miles will be deposited into your AAdvantage account and you will be assessed the annual fee on your first statement.
  4. Close the card within 30 days of the $450 annual fee posting to your account and you will be refunded the fee!
  5. Liquidate the gift cards using Bluebird/Serve at Walmart (pay off your credit card)

The key to my method is spending $7500 on the card before the first statement closes, which can be anywhere from 5-30 days after you receive the card in the mail. Don’t take any chances and find a Simon Mall or location which sells Visa gift cards to buy the gift cards ASAP after receiving the card. The total cost of the gift cards is $59 which is nothing in comparison to the benefits you will receive from the miles.

Once you’ve met the minimum spending requirements just wait for the statement to close and the points will be deposited into your AAdvantage account. Once the points are safely in your account cancel the card online and as long as it is within 30 days of the annual fee posting to your statement, the annual fee will be refunded! You can liquidate the gift cards and pay off the card at any time after the purchase. You only need to meet the spending requirements, not pay off the card to get the points.

Mrs. TT and I applied for the Citi Executive card in 2013 when the offer was 100k AAdvantage miles. We followed the steps above and it worked flawlessly. We then used our miles to book two first class flights to Europe earlier this summer. You too can follow the above steps and enjoy a first class trip domestically or abroad!

Thrifty Tip #1: Also apply for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select (30-50k miles) card to fly even farther! Wait more than 8 days between Citi applications though! (weird Citi rules)

Thrifty Tip #2: Have you already had the Citi Executive card? You can apply for it again 18 months after your prior approval!

Spending $7500 might seem a little intimidating but the benefits are worth it! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.
