Delta Launches Nonstop Service from Minneapolis to Honolulu this week

Delta announced this spring they would launch daily seasonal service from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Honolulu International Airport (HNL) this fall. Flights began service yesterday, October 25th, and will continue through March 27, 2016, using a 225-seat Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with 26 full flat-bed seats in Delta One, 29 seats in Economy Comfort and 171 Economy class seats.

This is great news for Minnesotans finally looking for direct easy access to sunny Hawaii. Delta had previously offered non-stop service but ceased service in 2011. No other carriers, besides Delta, offer nonstop service to Hawaii from Minneapolis.

Delta’s seasonal service between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Honolulu will operate as follows:

Sample flight for 65k SkyMiles (Main Cabin)

I did a quick search to see how many SkyMiles are required to fly the new route nonstop and it looks like you can fly roundtrip for as low as 65,000 SkyMiles this coming February. This is a decent redemption considering this nonstop flight retails for $786.

The Delta One redemption for 180k SkyMiles is probably not the best use of your miles. For comparison Delta One round-trip to Europe is only 125k SkyMiles. Sadly as a Delta Medallion member you will not be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Hawaii, since Delta’s complimentary Medallion upgrades only apply on flights to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Salt Lake City.

Bottom Line

Either way it’s exciting that Delta is once again offering nonstop service from Minneapolis to Honolulu. I plan to take advantage of this new route in the future, but only when main cabin SkyMiles redemptions are available for 50k. Award availability is best when the flights become available about 11 months in advance.
