[Hot Deal] Earn 156,000 AAdvantage Miles with the CitiGold Offer! (Expires 12/31)

Update: 2/9/16: You can no longer fund CitiGold accounts with a credit card.

We have quite a few new readers in the last couple months, and I want to make sure everyone knows about this years hottest offers. The CitiGold checking offer is one of the best offers of the year and it expires 12/31! By signing up for CitiGold and two of Citi’s co-branded American Airlines cards you can earn up to 156k AAdvantage miles!

Citi is still offering 50k American AAdvantage miles for their Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage card, as well as their CitiBusiness Platinum AAdvantage card. In addition, Citi is also offering 50k AAdvantage miles for signing up for a Citigold checking account!

The best part about opening the Citigold checking account is that it can be funded with a Citi credit card! You can knock out the $3k spending requirements on one of the cards by funding your Citigold account. Earning over 150k AAdvantage miles has never been easier!

50k Citi Platinum AAdvantage offer + $3k Minimum Spend + 50k CitiBusiness AAdvantage offer + $3k Minimum Spend + 50k CitiGold Checking offer = 156,000 AAdvantage Miles

  • 50k miles after $3,000 spend in 3 months (Limited Time Offer!)
  • No annual fee the first year, then $95
  • 2x points on phone, gas, and car rentals
  • 1st checked bag is free for you and four companions
  • Early boarding in Zone 1
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees

Citigold Checking Account Citigold Checking

  • 50k AAdvantage miles after (Offer expires 12/31)
    • Spend $1k on debit card within 6o days
    • Complete one bill-pay for two consecutive months on a non-citi account
  • Use code 42ERCWNQU6 during sign-up
  • $30 monthly fee is waived for the first two months
  • Only requires a soft pull (instead of hard pull) on your credit report so your credit score won’t be impacted

Steps:

  1. Apply for the Citi Platinum AAdvantage Card. If you do not receive instant approval call reconsideration @ 800-763-9795.
  2. Apply to open the Citigold Checking Account. Make sure to use code 42ERCWNQU6 during sign-up.
  3. When applying for the Citigold account, you should see a button called promotional disclosures. This should include details of the offer. I recommend taking a screenshot or printing for recordkeeping purposes.
  4. Select to fund the Citigold account with a credit card. You can select the PDF link to fill out and call or fax into Citi. To send a free online fax use faxzero.com. You can only fund the Citigold account up to your credit limit. I’d recommend at least $3k to hit your minimum spend for the credit card offer. Make sure to contact CitiCards before you fund the account to notify them of the large upcoming transaction.
  5. Wait 48 hours and check to see if your credit card has been charged. If not call into CitiBank and they can process the credit card funding.
  6. You should receive your debit card in the mail  as well as  a checkbook. You will also get a letter with your debit pin. This could take 1-2 weeks. Be patient this isn’t as quick as getting a credit card in the mail.
  7. Set-up and complete one bill-pay for two consecutive months from your Citigold account.
  8. Spend $1k on the Citi debit card within 60 days. You can use it for normal spending or you can use it to load Bluebird or Serve at Walmart.
  9. Once you’ve completed both monthly bill-pays, and $1k debit card spending, make sure to contact Citi through a secure message to ensure the points are posted to your AAdvantage account. There are reports of points that are slow to post.
  10. Once the points post to your AAdvantage account you can close the Citigold account or downgrade it to a no-fee account. Just a heads up that you will be charged $30 a month for the Citigold account after the first two months. Because of the possible fees leave a couple hundred dollars in your account to avoid overdrafts. You can close the account online through the Citi Secure Message system.

Thrifty Tip #1: Call CitiCards to notify them you are making a large purchase from CitiBank and set your cash advance limit to $0. This way you should have no issue funding your account. Do this before faxing the funding instructions to CitiBank

Thrifty Tip #2: You can also receive Thank You Points instead of AAdvantage miles with code 42ERCZ42PY. You could apply for the Citi Thank You Premier card, to earn a total of 103k Thank You Points. Just follow the same steps.

Thrifty Tip #3: Be patient as the debit card, and checks can take over a week to show up in the mail.

Bottom Line

If you have not applied for the two 50k AAdvantage offers or the Citigold checking I highly recommend taking advantage of all three offers while you can. This is a great opportunity to meet your credit card’s minimum spend and get 50k extra miles! Never applied for a business credit card before? Read our guide! The CitiGold checking offer takes a little bit more leg work and patience,  but it’s an easy way to quickly build up your AAdvantage account.

Can I cancel the credit card after the miles posted? I already have a Barclay aa card, also you said it’s a soft pull for all 3 or soft pull just on the checking account?

    • I would keep the card open for 6-9 months and then cancel. You don’t want to hurt your chances with getting future cards with Citi. Soft pull is only with the checking account. All credit cards require hard pulls generally.

Hey thanks for the quicky reply, yes I meant that cancelling the cards before the annual fees hit. I already have a citi premier card with them, but that is the only card. My fico is around 750, would it be easy to be approved for both cards?

    Hi TT,
So I just got done doing this, got instant approval for the personal but not the business and got the checking account opened while I’m at it. Now I just have to wait until the card arrive so I can fund my checking account and then pay back the card with that fund, am I correct?

    Hi
I just applied for Citi gold and the platinum card. I am pretty new to this.
    Thank you again for sharing.

Hello! I’m new to your site but very fascinated. I’ve always considered myself pretty savvy in regards to credit card points/miles but you have certainly opened my eyes to an entirely new dimension. My question is this: when you open all these credit cards, most waive the annual fee for the first year. But what about after that? It seems like you must pay thousands of dollars in annual fees for all the credit cards you have open. Am I missing something?! Thanks again for all the great info. Cheers.

    • Great question Christian! Just close the cards shortly before the annual fee hits. That is unless you find the benefits of keeping the card open outweigh the annual fee. TT,
So I got everything setup with the gold checking account. I have one question, for the $1000 debit spending requirement, does using the citi gold debit reload to serve count as purchase or do I need to go buy gift card and then reload it to serve?

Do we have to use the AA card for everyday spending in order to be eligible for World elite Upgrade?
When I get the WE upgrade in 2 months can I apply for the AA business card the AA personal the same day to get one hard inquiry or do I have to wait a week in order to apply for 2 credit card with citi?
