Chase has announced the new bonus categories on their Chase Freedom card for the fourth quarter of 2018. If you are not familiar with the Chase Freedom credit card, it is a phenomenal no annual fee, cash back card that offers an increased cash back rate on rotating categories on a quarterly basis. Chase Freedom cardholders will earn 5% cash back (up to $1,500) at Wholesale Clubs, Department Stores & Chase Pay in quarter four of 2018. Chase Freedom customers can activate the Q4 offers which start on Saturday, September 15th for spending between October 1st and December 31st.

As an added bonus, if you hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve or a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card, the cash back can be moved into your Ultimate Rewards points balance. Because of this, you would effectively be earning 5X Ultimate Rewards on the bonus categories from the Freedom card. This is a great deal and the reason I often recommend the Chase Freedom card as a compliment to the Sapphire credit cards.

Benefits of the Chase Freedom Card

Sign up Bonus: Earn $150 Bonus after you spend $500 in the first three months of card membership. (This can be transferred to 15,000 Ultimate Rewards points if you hold a Sapphire card).

Earn 5% Cash Back: Earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in spending in rotating quarterly bonus categories. Q4 of 2018 will earn 5% cash back at Wholesale Clubs like Costco & Sam’s Club, Department Stores & Chase Pay.

Unlimited 1% Cash Back: Earn an unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases.

0% Intro APR: Receive a 0% APR for the first 15 months from account opening

The card has No Annual Fee

Affected By The Chase 5/24 Rule: This card is subjected to Chase’s 5/24 rule, so this is something to be aware of before applying.

Our Analysis

If you frequently shop at wholesale clubs like Costco or Sam’s Club, this is an exciting offer. Earning 5% cash back (or 5x Ultimate Rewards points) on up to $1,500 of spending is huge as you would normally only earn 1% back (or 1x Ultimate Rewards Point).

Additionally, the Chase Pay category should be easy to max out as well given the number of companies that accept it (Starbucks, Uber, many gas stations, etc.). For a full list of companies accepting Chase Pay, check out this link.

Keep in mind Q4 2018 will fall during the holiday season so it will be possible to earn 5% back or 5x Ultimate Rewards points on your holiday shopping at department stores.

Bottom Line

The Chase Freedom card is an excellent no annual fee cash back credit card that gets even better if you hold one of the Chase Sapphire cards. Further, the Freedom bonus categories for the fourth quarter of 2018 should be easy ones to take advantage of and maximize the spending you are already doing. Click Here to learn more about the Chase Freedom card.

Hey Nick, Just clarifying-we have a Chase Sapphire Preferred card. I read the paragraph that says that the cash back earned from the bonus category can be rolled into ultimate rewards points-but do I HAVE to have a Chase Freedom card to do this? Couldn’t I just shop the offer/bonus category with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card and get 5x rewards? You guys are the best, thanks!

Hey Josh, unfortunately it doesn’t work this way. These quarterly bonus categories are specific to the Chase Freedom Card. If you hold it along with one of the Sapphire cards, the 5% back it earns can be converted to Ultimate Rewards points.
