Chase has announced the new bonus categories for their Chase Freedom card for the first quarter of 2019, January through March.

These rotating bonuses are part of the reason why we love the Chase Freedom credit card. They simply sweeten the deal for a no annual fee card that allows you to earn cash back or earn lots of valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards points. Click Here to learn more about the Chase Freedom card.

Chase Freedom cardholders will earn 5% cash back at gas stations, drugstores, and road toll stations from Jan. 1 through March 31. Cardholders have to activate this offer in order to cash in – that should be live later today at the Chase Freedom page. Users have until March 14 to activate the offer, and can earn up to $1,500 cash back during the quarter.

But it’s not just cash back. If you hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve or a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card, you can move the bonuses into your Ultimate Rewards points balance. That means you’re earning 5x Ultimate Rewards points within the bonus categories. That’s an outstanding deal. It’s the reason we often recommend the Chase Freedom card to readers who already have one of the Sapphire credit cards.

Our Analysis

There are two real winners and one potential dud among this latest crop of bonus categories.

This should be your go-to card when paying for gas at the pump, as a 5% bonus is outstanding for spending you’re doing anyway. And the drugstore category could be lucrative. You could simply by gift cards from Walgreens, CVS, or similar chains to get the 5% bonus.

Tolls are a bit puzzling. Many road tolls only take cash, and they’re not used everywhere across the country. But if you live somewhere that allows you to pre-load a toll card, be sure to use a Chase Freedom card.

Bottom Line

The Chase Freedom card is an excellent card that gets even better if you hold one of the Chase Sapphire cards. These newest categories for the first quarter of 2019 aren’t the best but should make it pretty easy to earn some cash back or extra Ultimate Rewards points. Click Here to learn more about the Chase Freedom card.
