The coronavirus pandemic has forced banks, airlines, hotel chains, and others to get creative with credit cards, adding new perks to keep cardholders interested at a time when travel is largely on pause. Now, the suite of Delta's co-branded American Express cards is getting another bonus.

From the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card to the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card and even the top-tier Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card, Delta and Amex are adding bigger bonus categories for restaurants, purchases with Delta, and more – with no limit on how many bonus SkyMiles you can earn! There's also a way for select cardholders to earn towards Delta Medallion status for 2022 (since all status was automatically extended through 2021).

These offers are targeted, so not everyone will be eligible. Existing eligible cardholders will get an email to enroll in the offers, which run through Dec. 31, 2020.

These offers come after some elevated bonuses for putting supermarket spending on Delta cards lapsed at the end of July. It's a  savvy way to encourage Delta cardholders to keep charging expenses to their Delta cards  – especially on travel.

Thrifty Tip: All Delta flights booked by Aug. 31, 2020, can be changed or canceled (for a voucher) for free.

Our Analysis

Getting travelers to keep their travel rewards credit cards open – and keep them at the front of their wallets – is the name of the game right now.

It's clear that's exactly Delta's goal with offering bonuses for spending on Delta cards at restaurants and for purchases at Delta. Along with flying as a whole, spending on travel has dropped precipitously. Delta is hoping some bonus SkyMiles will get more travelers booking future flights – and using their Delta credit cards when they do it.

The ability to earn additional bonus SkyMiles as well as Medallion Qualifying Miles (MQMs) on the Platinum and Reserve cards is particularly interesting.

MQMs are an essential building block toward Delta status. And while Delta has extended all status all the way through 2021, earning status for 2022 is another matter with few people flying. Luckily, all current MQM earning will roll over to earn status again for 2022.

By maxing out this offer, you could earn enough MQMs to requalify for Delta Silver Status for 2022. That would require $50,000 in spending on your eligible Platinum or Reserve card. And unfortunately, any spending this year will not roll over toward the separate Medallion Qualifying Dollar (MQD) requirements for earning status for 2022.

Bottom Line

Even with travel on hold, there's no bad time to earn some additional Delta SkyMiles. While there might be more lucrative cards out there to use when you're eating out or for your everyday spend, this might just be enough to keep your Delta co-branded cards at the front of your wallet.
