Earlier this year, American Express announced it was acquiring the restaurant reservation platform and mobile app, Resy. And now, Amex is bringing Resy’s technology to its own mobile app.

According to Tech Crunch, Platinum Cardholders and Centurion Members will be able to search, book, and manage restaurant reservations from more than 10,000 restaurants (and growing) around the world through the American Express mobile app.

According to Amex, dining reservations and recommendations are the top requests for their concierge service – an undersung benefit of holding either the Platinum Card from American Express or Centurion card. It’s like having a personal assistant to help you book travel, buy gifts, and make dinner reservations.

Adding this ability to easily make restaurant reservations makes sense. It’s just the latest example of the credit card company thinking outside the box with the benefits associated with their top-tier travel rewards cards.

This new restaurant-booking feature is already available to a portion of Amex’s Platinum Card Member base. But American Express plans to roll out the feature more broadly in early 2020. If you hold the Platinum card, head to the “Membership” tab in the mobile app. If you see the “Access Top Restaurants” button in your account, you already have access to the restaurant reservations feature.

Our Analysis

American Express keeps pushing the envelope, finding new ways to upgrade their top-tier cardholders’ experiences.

Last month, the credit card company rolled out a refreshed version of the Green Card with enhanced benefits we haven’t seen on any other credit card. That includes $100 credits for Away Luggage, CLEAR membership, and Lounge Buddy a mobile app which allows you to purchase single-use airport lounge access. Amex also acquired Lounge Buddy earlier this year.

As a Platinum cardholder, I am excited about this new feature. Earlier this year, I was looking to make a reservation at a very popular restaurant in Minneapolis. After visiting the Resy mobile app, I wasn’t able to find a table for the date I was looking for.

After a quick email to the Platinum concierge, I was able to get a table for the date I was looking for at a great time. From this experience, it would appear Amex is holding some table inventory for their top-tier customers. And that should be a hallmark of this new, in-app reservation system, too.

Bottom Line

This is an exciting development if you often use the Amex concierge to make restaurant reservations. If you hold the Platinum Card from American Express, check your mobile app. If the functionality isn’t yet there, it should be coming in early 2020.
