If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer account, you should check your email. Many flyers (myself included) received an email this week offering free Gold, Platinum, or Platinum Pro AAdvantage elite status.

It isn’t clear how American is targeting customers for this promotion, but it’s likely intended for AA members who have flown with the airline but never held status. It’s possible I was targeted because I hold a co-branded American Airlines credit card along with Platinum Medallion Status with Delta. That’s the same level American is offering me, but it’s unclear whether either of these are factors.

Check your email to see if you’re eligible. If you’ve got an offer, it could mean some perks (including free cabin upgrades!) through May 15 when you fly with American.

The Deal

  • In order to take advantage of this promotion, you must register by Jan. 25, 2019, at 11:59 p.m. CST
  • Any status you are offered is valid through May 15, 2019
  • You can keep the status you are gifted through Jan. 31, 2020, by earning $2,400 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) & 20,000 Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs)
  • Travel completed before registration doesn’t count toward this challenge.

What Do I Get with American Airlines Elite Status?

You might be asking yourself just how sweet of a deal this is. The answer depends highly on which status you were targeted for. As you can see from the image below, the benefits get sweeter with each tier.

Bottom Line

If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer account, check your email for a targeted offer for free elite status. Again, we are not sure how and who they are targeting, but free status for almost half of 2019 is pretty generous.
