All Three Southwest Credit Cards with 50k offers now available! (Companion Pass)

Southwest Thrifty Traveler

In September, I announced that the Southwest Premier and Southwest Premier Business credit cards were available again with the 50k offers, which makes it easy to earn the Southwest Companion Pass. I realize not everyone has a business or sells things on eBay to craigslist to qualify for a business card. Well things just got a lot easier for everyone! The Southwest Plus card is now available so you can earn the Southwest Companion Pass with two personal cards. The Plus card is not always available so if you’ve been considering working on the companion pass the time is now.

Thrifty Tip #1: If you are planning to apply for two personal Southwest cards I’d recommend applying for one card per day. You may get denied if you apply for two personal cards in the same day. Conversely, if you apply for a personal and business card you will likely get approved in the same day.

The other great thing about earning the companion pass at this time of year is that if you have the sign-up bonus points credited to your account in January you can earn the companion pass for all of 2016 and all of 2017. The trick to this is to wait to put the spending on both cards until after the statement closes in December. Then hit the $2k spend requirements on both cards and the bonus points and spending will be credited to your card in January, thus earning you the 104k points in 2016. Then all you need to do is spend $6k more on the cards to earn 110k points in 2016, to finally earn the Companion Pass. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Thrifty Tip #2: Apply for two Southwest cards in October or November and then hit the $2k spend on both cards after the December statement closes. Then when the statement closes in January you will earn all 104k Southwest miles in 2016 and will be eligible to earn the companion pass in 2016, which will be good for the full year and 2017 as well!

Like I’ve said time and time again the Southwest Companion Pass is the best deal in the points game if you travel with a spouse or friend frequently domestically in the US, Caribbean, or Mexico. Now is the time to apply and earn the points in January to maximize the time you can have the pass.

Could you theoretically get approved for the plus, premier, and business premier card and get to 125,000 points that way? Say apply for the premier and the business premier and get approved, probably worth a shot to apply for the plus then right?

    • The approval for the business card would be the tough part, but yes it is possible to be approved for all three cards. I would apply for the business first. I’ve had all three at the same time at one point, but not all approved in one year. Let me know how it goes!

Um I have a question, they seemed to have stopped both the plus and business premier cards because they wouldn’t allow me to sign up for more than one. I feel like they caught on or something.

I currently have a Chase Southwest business card and my wife has a personal card which we both rec’d the 50k bonus miles for in 2014. I want to try to apply for new cards in order to acquire the Companion Pass. Can I apply for 2 personal cards? Any suggestions on strategy?
