Get a 25% Bonus on Citi ThankYou Point Transfers to FlyingBlue
Citi ThankYou points from credit cards like the Citi Prestige or the Citi Premier are a real mixed bag, but chalk this one up as a win for Citi.
The bank is offering a 25% transfer bonus when sending ThankYou points to Air France/KLM FlyingBlue through July 20, 2019. This comes on the heels of a recently expired 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic.
There’s no better time to transfer points than when you get a bonus like this, as these are basically free airline miles. But bonus or no bonus, you should never transfer credit card points without a specific redemption in mind. These transfers are one-way streets – once you send them to an airline or hotel account, you can’t get them back.
And while FlyingBlue isn’t the strongest transfer partner out there – it’s a lot like Delta, with ever-changing and unpredictable award rates – two major sweet spots come to mind to help you get to Europe or Hawaii on the cheap.
How to Make the Most of the Transfer Bonus
One of the brightest spots for FlyingBlue is their monthly Promo Rewards. Air France and KLM put out a list of select routes to Europe from the U.S. with award rates slashed by 25% to 50%.
A new list will be out in the next week. But through the end of June, you can book a round-trip from Houston-Intercontinental (IAH) or Atlanta (ATL) to almost anywhere in Europe for 50% off. That means you could book round-trip flights to Europe for just 29,000 miles – transferring just 24,000 Citi ThankYou points.
Or fly business class from Chicago-O’Hare (ORD) to almost anywhere in Europe for 43,500 miles each way – transferring only 35,000 ThankYou points to book it.
But there’s another, lesser-known sweet spot for FlyingBlue: Flying to Hawaii on the cheap. By using FlyingBlue miles, you can fly from almost anywhere in the U.S. on Delta to all four major Hawaiian islands for just 35,000 miles round trip – or just 28,000 ThankYou points after the transfer bonus.
The beauty of this workaround is that it works nationwide. Whether you’re looking for nonstop flights from Los Angeles (LAX), a one-stop jaunt from New York City-JFK (JFK) on the east coast, or tiny towns in the Midwest, you can book it for 28,000 ThankYou points. That’s no small feat considering Delta often charges 70,000 SkyMiles or more for the exact same flights.
If you’ve got a redemption in mind for your Citi ThankYou points, be sure to take advantage of this transfer bonus to FlyingBlue before it ends July 20.
