10 Tips for Finding Cheap Flights
Stop clearing your cookies
Clearing your cookies or using an incognito browser does not reduce your fare. This is a silly recommendation which has no factual basis. When searching always use Google Flights.
Flash sales never last
The hotter the flight deal, the shorter it lasts. Mistake fares and flash sales can last from a few hours to only minutes. Always book now and ask questions later. If you’ve booked a mistake fare, it’s important to wait at least 14 days before booking additional travel. Although rare, mistake fares are sometimes cancelled shortly after booking.
Peak summer fares are rare
If you’re looking for the perfect summer fare June 20th – July 30th, it’s unlikely to happen. Peak summer fares are rare. Better to plan for late summer August – September, this is the ideal time for a flight deal.
Priceline allows you to cancel almost any fare within 24 hours
Airlines and most OTA (online travel agencies) such as Priceline, Kayak, etc, allow you to cancel most fares within 24 hours. If you see an incredible deal just book it, and then mull it over for the next 24 hours.
Save by booking through Momondo
Momondo, which is owned by Priceline, works with several smaller OTAs to offer slightly cheaper fares than you’d normally find elsewhere. The reason they can offer them for less is usually due to the fact that they are nonrefundable and may not be cancellable within the first 24 hours. You can generally save $20 – $80 by using Momondo.
Google Flights is the best way to search
Google Flights is the best tool to find a flight deal. It’s incredibly simple and easy to use. Utilize the calendar to search through the entire 11 month schedule in seconds. You can also search up to five departure airports and five destinations in one search. Once you find your flight, we’d appreciate it if you help support us by booking through our Priceline links.
Don’t count on cheap fares
Flights are at historic lows due cheap oil and increased competition from budget airlines. Don’t assume fares will stay this way. If you see a cheap flight, book it. There is no way to know what fares will do in the near future.
Fly full service airlines when possible
Budget airlines offer incredibly cheap fares but you’ll likely have to pay for a carry-on bag, seat assignment, drinks, and meals. These fees can be hard to figure out and they can add up quickly. International fares on full service carriers such as American, Delta, and United generally include a checked bag, seat assignment, and meals.
Not all budget airlines are the same
Leisure carriers such as Condor and Icelandair include checked bags. Icelandair even includes seat assignment, and Condor includes a meal . These two airlines are excellent choices over being nickeled and dimed by Norwegian, Level, and WOW air.
